There is no reason to be targeting a lowest common denominator. Unless you're a purely exclusive developer like Naughty Dog you would have separate programming teams each working on the version for their platform. Even Naughty Dog could go non-exclusive without compromising quality. You don't necessarily have to release simultaneously.I despise multiplatform releases, as the programmers have to cater to the lowest common denominator and one console always suffers.
If programmers really were catering to the lowest common denominator they'd develop for DS, then do a quick and dirty dump to every other platform.
Not really the same thing. Ports are perfectly fine when done correctly.Ports are especially bad when the game was originally developed for one system and then ported as an afterthought to make some quick cash.
If a company generally does sloppy ports are they really likely to be typically putting any real effort even if they were only releasing exclusively for a single platform?
