PS3 price cut - but how much?

I don't care unless it is cut by at least 50%

And even then it will be expensive

And after a lame assed press release like that from Sony, PS3 sales will plummet for the rest of the month while everyone waits for the price cut.

Well done Sony!

Personally I can't see them dropping the price by more than $100 (Which is R1000 in electronics FX conversion?) but at R5500 the PS3 is still to much for me...

Especially without it offering anything over it's competitors.

I'd only start considering it if it came down to match the XBox 360 price. The games and controllers also need to be a similar price.

It still will be expensive, I think the PS3 will be only worth it next year, where all the kinks will be worked out and games will be using the console 100%.
The only reason I will buy this console is for the new GTA if it doesnt get released on PC

The price is only one issue, a 20% drop in price will not make it more attractive if the stable of games remains poor.

Um GTA IV is being released on the Xbox 360 and with extra content as well?

So far Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 are the two reasons I want a PS3... But with Colin McRae Dirt coming to the 360 and MGS possibly also coming I am running out of reasons

Ha ha ha haaaaa

"Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise, and a very good business model, compared with ours ... because it's cheaper," he said, adding there was "no question" consumers wanted a lower price.
You PLONKER!

I don' want lower price, honest!

Yeah MGS would be the only reason i would buy the PS3 but unfortunately one reason isnt enough for spending this kind of money. Rather use that money and pump up my desktop because then again what can any console do that a PC cant ( besides have mobility )

thats what i heard to xbox has now got GTA

The console should be rock bottom price, it should be sold at cost or maybe even Sony take a knock on the price. People will rush out and get them (mum, dad pleeeeasssee, they sooo cheap) and then get forced to buy hugely expensive games for their new chosen paltform. Sony should be looking for cash from the sale of games not from the console...but then again, Im no economist.

You may not be an economist but you did just describe exactly what they are currently trying to do. They are losing over $200 on every console to try and move units. This is the normal strategy of console makers and Microsoft did the exact same thing in the beginning as well...

However to make the PS3 affordable it needs to drop by $250 which would mean a $450 loss on every console which is to much for Sony to take the hit on...

What Sony must do again is release technical info to the mod community to get quality mod chips out there asap.

Blu ray drives are pricey so a bootloader that can allwon games to be played from the hard disk will be cool.

With this kind of facility available console sales will jump, since the cost of playing games will be cheap.

It worked beautifully with the PS2...

riiiiiiight, that's what Sony wants. Lots of pirated games so they lose twice, once when they sell the game console at a loss and again when everyone copies the games.

Sony made a lot of money out of the millions of PS2s that came out and when straight to the guy in his garage fitting mod chips.

The spares and repairs were controlled by a few companies who made sure you paid through your neck for spares. A lot of mod chips caused consequencial failures that saw sony making millions again.

While sony does receive a royalty from games, they also made lots out of the mod chip business. It also entrenched the console in the market, and they made their money from royalties from those who could afford the games. A certain amount of people will only ever be able to afford games and those people will buy such games. The rest who would otherwise not have bought a console did buy one because the mod chip was their salvation. The mod chipping certainly hasnt harmed Sony and they never really tried to actively suppress it through various releases of their consoles.

And it seems hard to imagine... but this is the capitalist world

I must say the PS3 is impressive looking, but that price detracts from it. ;)

I actually saw a PS3 in action for the first time this weekend, and I must say I'm not impressed for R6.5k.... it needs to be super-duper-special...

They were playing GTHD, and it didn't look very good to me...

Anywho, Sony need to drop their price VERY drastically to make it an attractive system, esp with the Xbox price and the soon to be released Wii.
