PS3 Price Drop!!

I checked in the latest T3 magazine that the PS3 happens to be the best blue-ray player on the market at the moment - and also the cheapest! :)

For that alone, I'll buy a PS3, but it's so much more than just a gaming console.... ;)

Sony themselves are releasing a better Blu-Ray player for $299 this upcoming holiday season... Seems like a stupid reason for buying a games console to me.

Not to mention the fact that there are hardly any Blu-Ray movies worth watching at the moment and they still have not won the round.

For someone in looking for a games console who also wants to watch hi-def movies, it's a fantastic reason to buy a games console.

What games were they?

I got Lego Star Wars and Amped. I know other people got Rainbow 6: Vegas, Call of Duty, GRAW, Quake IV and some sports titles...

I have always believed in stand alone systems.... The PS2's DVD playback was terrible, the PS3's Blu-Ray currently doesn't fulfill the requirements for the next Blu-Ray spec which means it will be out of date at the end of the year.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have not settled their specifications yet. I recommend waiting until one of them is settled and is the clear winner. You are not missing out on anything.

Personal opinion is all...

Lego Star Wars was an awesome game! It gave away Episode 3 before it came out.

What was terrible about it? I'm still using my PS2 for watching movies...

What requirements? Out of date at the end of the year??? What you smoking??? And don't give me that lame reason about the picture in picture...

A vast amount of them broke down and they have absolutely no features.

The Blu-ray Disc Association has mandated that all players released after October 31, 2007 must support a specific feature set for BD-Java—the technology responsible for giving Blu-ray discs the "extra features" like movie commentary and picture-in-picture. There are two issues with this order.

lame as it is it is still an issue. There is no reason that the PS3 won't be able to just update itself to the new version though. As long as you are connected to the internet that it.

Else the newer Blu-ray movies won't work in it... like I said

What happens if the next specification is a hardware related issue? Your PS3 is then useless as a BR player... It's a great gaming console but I don't think it should be bought just because it can play Blu-Ray...

The bluray movies will still work, you just won't be able to view something like the picture in picture, which is useless anyways.

What if...

What if they release a new DVD specification, then all current dvd players will be useless? So far there's NO issues with the PS3 bluray player, so even now buying a PS3 for just watching bluray movies isn't a problem at all.

Given the fact that PS3 can go online. Wouldn't you be better off having a PS3 blu-ray player with the possibility of firmware patches etc rather than the stand alone player?

Since the standards are not set in stone yet the next change could be a hardware change.

I don't think the chances of this happening are very high at all though. It's just an opinion.

But then the 360 fanboys won't have anything to complain about? ;)

If you want reasons to buy a PS3 I can give you many. If HD movies have something to do with your purchase then I would expect you to be more excited about Sony implementing downloadable media including full length movies.

Since they already support SA and the distributor of the PS3 in SA is SterKinekor this is all looking very good to us.

If you want to use the fact that your PS3 can play movies that don't get sold much as justification in buying it then I find it amusing.

Still too expensive.
XBOX still wins my money (if I had any after Tito's reaming, that is)

It is set in stone already. Early DVD players did have problems handling the full standard. The difference is that blu-ray does not yet seem to be done with its standard.

Why useless?

Well useless in my opinion. The examples they give are something like when you watch a certain scene in a movie, the picture in picture might have the director explaining why he did something a certain way etc. Now I don't know about other people, but when I watch a movie, I want to watch ONLY the movie, without some dude interupting me.

I gots me one, but think about this guys, i got one when it retailed at R6300, then they go and up the price by R500, now they go and drop it by R700.00, this method sounds as stupid as our government when they do their hated price ups on the petrol!

Finally a good move from Sony, now give us games pretty please?

I reckon this is way too little, waaaaaaaayyy too late.

I still can't see how anybody can see the PS3 as good value for money. If it was the price of the 360 sure, but unless it can make me coffee i'm not paying R5500 for it.

Also I like walking into CNA and being able to buy a new game every time, not seeing the same ones time and time again :D

How are Sony going to afford this?

Weren't they already making huge losses on each console??
