PS3 Region 3

HELP!!!

I have just returned from a trip to Singapore. While wondering around Duty Free I was surprised to see them selling Playstation 3's. I hadn't seen them anywhere else in Southeast Asia but was told you could get them in Duty Frees outside US and Japan. On an impulse I bought it together with an extra remote and 2 games. Upon getting home I immediatety set it up and everything and played the games I had bought. Later I decided to try and watch a DVD. This is where my problem lies. When I insert the DVD it says PAL format is not supported. To my horror I discovered my entire DVD collection is PAL so I cant play a single DVD on the PS3. After reading the manual I dicovered that the machine supports the following region codes:
Blu Ray Disc : A
DVD: 3
PS3: 3
PS 2: NTSC J

I also tried a ps2 game from my brother and it also says PAL so I can't support it.

Does this mean:
1) I will never be able to play a South African/ UK dvd on my machine?
2) I will never be able to play a SA/UK PS3 game beacuse we're not in zone 3
3) I will never be able to play a SA/UK Blu Ray because we're not in zone A
4) All PS2 games won't be able to play on my machine

Please advise on anything I can do or anyone I can contact to assist me

Your console is NTSC.

Not too sure if you can change it, I'll wait for other forumites to comment.

2) Afraid so
3) Yip
4) No, only PAL (SA and UK) games will not play. You'll have to import your games from the region where you got your console. ( American NTSC games might play, not sure.)


The only way for you to get out of the predicament you're in is to have your console chipped. However, since no chips yet exist, you might have to wait a while.
 
Cant change it yet maybe in another couple of months, or maybe try loadin Linux on it and getting a region free DVD player.

EDIT: You should eb able to play any PS3 game (Sony has stated that PS3 games are supposed to be region free)
 
Welcome to the anti-consumer world of region codes. It reflects the total disdain the media industry has for you, the paying customer. Unfortunately you're going to have to wait for some enterprising hackers to release a fix for this intentional defect.

But does the PS3 contain a means for a game to check the region of the console? If so we'll probably face the same problem that exists with the Xbox 360 - game developers deciding to lock their game to a region. This way Sony and Microsoft can just say its not their fault. They, the game developers, the movie studios and anyone else involved in these practices should be hit with punitive fines for interfering with free trade.
 
The news doesn't seem good but thanks for the response.
Where would you go to get the machine "chipped"? What does it entail and what does it cost.
Should I try and get a refund from the store, in which case I will have to wait a couple of months for it to come to SA and pay alot more than what I have paid for my current one?
 
Blu-ray and PS3 games should be region free if I'm not mistaken, unfortunately all the legacy stuff will be locked, sorry :(
 
Game developers will be able to check the region code and hence be able to region lock the games themselves

Blu-ray was always going to be region locked, pity about that
 
just get a firmware update from the official ps3 site,problems solved.Just choose the options carefully
you have to plug the ps3 into a lan to adsl router and get internet on it working first

? I have never heard of a firmware update that could convert a NTSC piece of hardware to PAL.....

You got a link? I always thought it was different hardware.... Not that I know anything about it really though :D.

Miguel, your best option would be to sell it on BidorBuy and then take the cash and buy a Xbox 360 instead. Better games and gfx currently...

You gotta research before you jump the gun - "I want it first".

Guess you'll have to get all your PS3 games and BluRay movies imported from Japan.

I am sure the firmware update will fix it,I think i was mistaken,maybe i read it wrong ,but to my knowlege i read it on some forum,I will get the link for the forum.will search my history files

The interesting bit? the PS3 BR is region locked, but the 360's HD-DVD is region free!

Woot! 360 FTW! - Added it's being released in Aus for AU$250 ~ R1,400.

Miguel, I'd also seriously suggest flogging the PS3 to some rabid fanboy and getting yourself a 360.
 
It seems that you can play any PS3 game from anywhere in the world on it.
You can play any BD movie from either USA or Japan. I'd actually prefer
you version to a PAL version because the local PS3 will only be able to play
B movies, ie stuff from Europe and SA, while the BIGGEST selection
by far is in the US and Japan. You can order cheap BD's from
Take2.co.za or any one of a million US shops and Japanese
BD movies from sites like Amazon JP and CDJapan.

To watch DVD use a normal DVD player - they're cheap.
To play PS2 games use a PS2 console.

Problem solved.
 
Not sure if this thread is dead yet, but i have a Hong Kong machine, i can play BD movies from US, Europe and SA. PS3 games are region free but ps2 games for me are limited to NTSC zone 3. There is an exploit that allows u to bypass this (google: PS3 TIFF exploit). Might allow playing of region restricted games. I just need to get a hold of a Zone3 ps2 disc to test it out.
