PS3 release tonight - Launch Details and Numbers

Just got back from Northgate.... blah nothing really interesting.

My camera's battery went flat so I am sure it was about to get better but I still see no reason to take the PS3 over the Xbox..

And they had it running on a 42" Plasma (F1 Championship)

Unfortunately no fighting, I don't think half the people who pre-ordered are going to even pick it up tonight.

BT Games in Cape Town had about 60 - 80 people last night. If you look at how small the shop is, it's quite a big turnout. Lot's of people dressing up for the competition as well.

I'm planning to check my local shops a bit later. Anyone else checked to see if their local shops have stock on their shelves?

Ill be very surprised if they sold out, sold out sold out!

I really doubt they all sold out, especially the bigger chain stores like CNA, Game, Makro and the like... Oh yeah and incredible connection.

yeah it's not that the PS3 is unpopular but the fact that our console game base is not as big as other countries. I guess SA didn't receive a lot of units but anyways..we wait and see. Also R6k is some ppl's 2-3 month salaries so it's hardly justifiable for some.

How much are the games?

i was at bt games pavillion last night.. only like 4 pre orders.. about 20 guys there.. and 2 dressed up dudes

At least at the 360 launch, the head of M$ for Central Europe, Middle East and Africa attended, and spent time talking to regular gamers like me.

It said a lot about Microsoft's approach this time around, that they're willing to listen to gamers on a "grassroots" level, and incorporate what gamers actually want into their product.

Sony just tells gamers what they're supposed to want in a console.

Someone from Microsoft seemed to be there last at Northgate.. He was keeping a very low profile but from the whispers I heard it sounded like he had come to take a look...

He must have left happy :)

He must have left happy :)

Why?

One of the resellers for the PS3, Budget Technologies said the pre-orders for the PS3 are better than it was for the 360. They had to stop pre-orders to have units available to sell at launch.
Makro pre-sold their entire allocation.

So one or 2 shops didn't have a lot of people showing up at MIDNIGHT...

It's only just starting. Some interesting times ahead...

Yeah I was the one who posted that article remember :),

I am talking about the lack of real interest at the shops, most of the people who have pre-ordered seem to be waiting until today to pick them up. It just didn't have the same excitement levels as the Xbox 360 launch....

Oh and it seems to be Macro not Makro, they are resellers not retailers. Never heard of them either?

My view on why people didn't pick up their pre-orderes at midnight:
If you pre-ordered one you were basically guaranteed one...
Why go out at midnight to pick up a R6k+ investment and drive home after 12, in South Africa, and not play it (most people who pre-ordered probably have work today).

Thats just my thinking

Methinks your reasoning is sound.

Because you have been waiting for it for months.... I pre-ordered my Xbox 3 months before release and picked it up at Midnight.

Granted I was out drinking and only realised I could pick it up when I left the pub and saw the time but I was there anyway :D

Well Gav, considering you have a whole blog dedicated to games, I'm pretty sure you're more of a gamer than most ;)

And if I waited a couple of months for it, a couple of hours aint gonna kill me
