Hi there , Looking for some advice ..
I have +- R 3000 to spend ... I want something that plays Blu-Ray movies.

Should i get a PS3 or a Blu-Ray surround sound Hifi / home theater set ?

suggestions please.
:)

If you get the PS3 ... you have no speakers - right?
Or am I missing something?

So would I need an amp + speakers as well ? ( Sorry for sounding stupid , but totally clueless on this subject )

Try get hands on d5100/5300...

Get the one without 3d..

A lot of people would start recommending onkyo's and all those.. But u gonna be splashing out a bucketload for the whole set at the end of the day!

Get easy (and quick solution) which is great quality too, which are the Samsung hts's (d5100 for that matter) . Should price between 1250 to 2250

Check game, they got the whole range and should be a special seeing they trying to clear the lot

Do you want decent or do you want cheap? Because cheap won't get you decent, but decent isn't necessarily expensive either, just have to save up a bit more.

Dude, honestly... The Samsung hts is quality.. Ive seen some crap hts's considered as cheap, but their new range really stepped up a notch (or 3)

U heard the quality and checked the additional functions it offers?

And secondly, why go for a big receiver when he only needs 1 hdmi out?

No point.. Waste of money?

Would you only play blu rays on the PS3? Do you game?

All games are currently on PC, so initially it would only be for Blu ray. But I'm sure at some stage a game or 2 would be played. But theres not much i cant play on my current PC setup.

But it sounds like im gonna exceed my budget going the PS3 route , cause of having to buy amp + speakers.

Admittedly I haven't. The all-in-ones I did hear before were crap. Some were loud, but they were still crap. Too much bass does not make a good system. I'd take a good stereo setup over poor 5.1 any day - the stereo setup can be built on as you can afford better supplementary speakers.

1 HDMI now, but then in a year's time he'll be back asking how he can connect DSTV, PS3, media player etc. to it. And then we'll tell him that he needs a new system. Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Mike, couldn't agree more! But in these times... And I also speak out of experience, we wanna have a solution and we want one now .. With the budget available. I for one make a standard salary, I break even at the end of the month, so when a 'little bonus' gets handed out once a year, we target what we need and splash on it.. For some (in my case) there is no solution as "save another month" or " wait another year before purchasing one so u can go bigger.
That is why I'm supportive of what the op requested and keep budget in mind at all times while eliminating unnecessary items to bring price down as much as possible (eg. 3d / heavy av receivers)

In my circumstance, my 5500 hts might not be high end onkyo grade.. But the sound q blows me away.. As for the sw level, yeah... Standard settings are high, but tweak the baby and it'll amaze u! I'd give u a intro if u were in sandton area, but I stand ground when I say.. The new hts's are crisp clear and def quality worth the penny!

I say get the ps3 for now. Its a blu-rayer, media server (wi-fi), internet erm system, 3D gaming device. Its got a hard drive to store movies, music, photos.
Has bluetooth also so you can use bluetooth stereo headphones (not cheap) for great sound.
If you have a PSP, you can stream movies and play some games over remote play on the psp (from the ps3).

Great piece of technology. Awesome.
Check around cos prices are dropping. Cheapest I saw was R2699 bout a month ago.

PS3 + Logitech Z5500's = Pure awesomeness!

Yes, I know it's not in the budget. :)

But I would need additional amp + 5.1 speaker kit to get all the benefits of the Blu-ray ? This would push the costs out of the budget.
