Before someone moans like a stuffed pig about this being beaten to death and being in the wrong forum hear me out.

I am looking for a media centre, not a gaming console. I dont care about what titles are on what console and what is coming and what not.

I care for the following, which console will best fit into my current AV system.

I need the photos have taken to be viewable and look smashingly good, the music I have to sound great( many gigs worth), the movies that I have ripped and downloaded to look great. I would like to have upconversion of standard quality dvd and other programming to HD for viewing on a 720p projector. A media pc might be an idea but a console that does it all just sounds better/cheaper.

Allow me to repeat, I dont play games, dont have the time. I want a good system that will allow me to dump media files on it and enjoy them. I have also thought of a Mvix player, but for the money the idea of a gaming console might be a better bet.

Any thoughts to help me decide?

I don't think a console is going to suite your requirements, since you don't play games rather get a medica pc, you can customise it your exact requirements.

What about a stand alone media streamer then ... ? I have the Pinnacle Systems Showcenter 200 in my AV system and it's great. Lacks HDMI, but has optical/coax out, RCA out, SCART out, component out and S-Video out.

Also got the Xbox in my system as a streamer. It's got HDMI, optical and component and pretty good as well. I only set mine up last night so I have played properly, but seems to support less file formats the Showcentre ...

The additional blue ray player is a draw card. That then opens the formats war, how is going to win it is anyone's guess.

A HDMI connection is a must, otherwise a HD display is not going to have much point.

PS3, yes, even i say so. the video store 100m from my house has hundreds of Blu Ray movies. so it's a safe bet

I haven't had a PS3 before, but the XBOX is way too noisy... i use it currently as a media centre extender, but my Mvix is better just for the fact that i don't need to push the volume to hear anything other than fan noise

Yea it is friggen noisey :( I already have a PC running in my lounge ... now that *sigh*

Is it really that bad? Does it spoil quite scenes?

Xbox 360 and PS3 = waste if you are not using it for gaming, If you want a media center get a media center PC with a Hi-definition DVD or Blu-ray drive. That way you can have a 500gb hard drive and all that stuff. Sure its more expensive than a PS3 or Xbox 360 but the advantages are numerous.

If you are going to chose between a PS3 and Xbox 360 (Don't know why if you not going to play games) then get the Xbox 360. Blu-ray is the new beta-max and it has an ugly name (sounds like a sunglasses brand )

i dunno hey i have a feeling that blu ray will win the war, due to the ps3 :)

blu ray drive plus a 500 gig hdd alot more expensive than a ps3

Can a usb HDD enclosure be added to the ps3 for extra storage? If you can it would negate the whole media centre pc idea for me.

OK, i just tested my XBOX and the decibels is 68 - 69 dB (at 1m). So if you can live with that type of noise, then it won't be a problem for you.

may i ask how u tested it and what you u used?

damn thats load

like a vacuum cleaner

I have an spl meter, and i just measured 1m and checked the reading (with my aircon running it jumps to around 80dB)

1m is the standard used to measure this, that's why i used 1m
