PS3 vs X Box

OK, i just tested my XBOX and the decibels is 68 - 69 dB (at 1m). So if you can live with that type of noise, then it won't be a problem for you.

Xbox is really bogus. It has this huge brick of a power supply plus it lacks an HD-DVD drive. PS3 is prolly better but by and large I think they both suck because they're both ego inflated by Howard Stringer (Sony) and Steve Ballmer (MS). Choose your master right there...

if it was made, or endorsed, by your beloved Steve *cough* small man syndrome *cough* Jobs, then i suppose you will support it, cause he IS your master.... ;)

i got a ps3 when it came out for its multimedia capabilities as i was not into gaming.my setup is similar to wynsam's with a 720p projector. the ps3 is an excellent multimedia centre.u have to use ps3video9 to convert some of the video files.the 60gb hard drive is easily replacable or u could add an external drive via usb. u could also stream files via tversity from your pc using wireless.blu ray gives excellent hd movies especially on the big screen.with hdmi 1.3 on the ps3 you also set for next gen hd audio - the first bunch of receivers supporting it have just been released.
the games are pretty good too.
if you want good advice try www.ps3za.co.za -our local ps3 forum.check out the media thread.

The PS3, I convert all my divx movies etc to mp4 then play it through ps3 as my sound and tv is connected to it. I've also read today that sony have just made a deal with divx so it will be able to play divx movies as well in the near future.

Thanks for this post. What's it like for viewing high quality photos, I believe that some media centres like the Mvix are really poor for photos.

I have not used divx before, whats so great about it? Good to hear that the PS3 is going to support it though, the more formats the better.

The DivX Codec is used to compress video's to a smaller size whithout losing too much image and sound quality. Probably 90% of the movies available for download online is compressed using DivX. So basicly when the PS3 support DivX you'll be able to watch movies you download off the internet on the console, without having to convert them to a different format first

I agree that a non gaming consol might be better. Thats units price is the same as the PS3 right now, the 40 giog version, with the ps3 you get a blue ray player thrown and the ability to play games for my two kids further down the line( ages 5 and 7-- they are too young imho to play consol games now -- they should be outside exercising their imaginations and bodies!)

The native HD source looks good and is a big drawcard of the ps3. Only problem right now is finding any blue ray titles in SA.

You can get Media PC's that look much nicer than the Xbox or PS3. I think Sony has nice media PC's but you could also get that IPOD thing, don't know what its called.

At gateway two stores opened today. Incredible connection had an opening day special of the 60gig PS3 for R4999 with he two titles and the two controllers -- sold out by the time I got there. People are queuing to get in there -- madness

Dion-wired have the 40 gig unit at 3999.Stock still there What do guys think? .

Media PC all the way. Although a PS3 for 4k sounds like a good deal, if you can handle having that black beast in your lounge.

Come on, a media pc with a blue ray drive and a decent gfx card will cost way more then R4999. You can't play ps and ps2 games on the 40gb version of the PS3 oh and I think there's less usb ports on it, however if that won't bother you, get the 40gb version by all means. You can always change the harddrive or use an external usb drive.

Oh yes, you can install Linux on the ps3 so then it's a pc as well.

Linux :( . The OS where you battle to get everything to work, then when it is working, you don't use it. Also seems like Linux people are a bunch of alcoholics always going on about WINE :p
