Hi guys

I've owned a PS2 for the better part of a decade and I've really enjoyed it. The supply of new games has dried up quite significantly as of late and I have been thinking about buying one of these new consoles like a PS3 or a XBox360.

I tend to lean towards the PS3 because it has Gran Turismo on it. I have always enjoyed those games and would like to experience this new one.

What I'm really concerned about though is not so much the availability of games on these things but the reliability of them. I'm not prepared to spend all that money on something for games only to have it brick itself just as the warranty runs out. I'd like to know which one is the most reliable and which models I should look out for and why.

Quite frankly now I'm not sure if this is the right subforum or not. Maybe this belongs in hardware but I reckon the people in here probably have their ears to the ground when it comes to this sort of thing.

Buy both.

I have an xbox360 for over 3years now without problems, however, it is definitely the console with the most issues (perhaps more historical, but still) from what I've read. Considering you've been happy with your PS2, I'd suggest the PS3.

I don't think reliability one way or the other is much of a concern any more. The first 360s were horrid, but MS have a very decent warranty in place for that. Besides, buying a PS3 is no guarantee that you won't suffer a failure the day after the warranty expires. Look at the differentiating factors & base your decision on that: which is more prevalent among your mates, which console's exclusives appeal to you more, which controller do you find more comfortable, how much value will having a Bluray player add, which intrigues you more - controller-less Kinect or waving around a lit-up dildo, are you willing to pay monthly subs for a (arguably) slightly better online experience etc.

Judging by how quiet the 'net has gone concerning GT5 I don't think it's a good enough reason by itself to go PS3 over 360 - it'd be interesting to hear from any PS3/GT5 fans what their long-term impressions are. Forza3 is a 16 months old & it still gets a fair bit of time in my 360...

They have a warranty longer than 1 year?

My brother keeps track of these consoles a lot more than I do and he said there were new versions of these consoles available now that might be more reliable. I've just heard so many horror stories and it is a fair amount of money to part with for something that basically just plays games. For that price I want it to last.

Honestly I don't think I game enough to go into all the accessories so I hadn't really considered them. I will probably just stick to the more traditional games that use the controllers. Although my girlfriend loves the idea of jiggling around like people do with the Wii. I used a friend's XBox briefly a few times so I don't really know what the controllers are like. I suppose I should go into a store and try one out to see what it is like.

Oh carp :(

I enjoyed GT on the PS2 a lot. Played it to oblivion. I was really hoping GT5 was going to be as good as the previous ones. I guess I'm going to have to do more reading before I decide.

This.

I have both PS3 and X360. I was really excited about GT5, but in all honesty, it's a bit of a Duke Nukem Forever. :/ Too much time waiting for it built up too much hype. Yes it's awesome and fun, but not as much as I'd hoped. Forza 3 is much older and still plays waaay better and graphically superior. The menu system and viewing of cars is dismal. Dirt 2 on the Xbox is my favourite game of all. Plus Forza 4 and Dirt3 are coming soon!

Forza 3 came out in '09 ... just do a google search on "GT5 vs Forza 3" and you'll see how many there are. Quite interesting read.

If a game is available on multi platform I rather buy it on xbox than ps3.

If you're used to the PS2 controller then you'll be fine. I just hate how my trigger fingers keep slipping off the PS3 remote, whereas the x360 remote feels much better.

Quite honestly at the end of the day there's no wrong choice. It's like choosing between a Ferrari and Lambo. Opinions on which one is better will always clash, but you'll LOVE being able to have either of them. Unless you have both, you won't know what you're missing on either side of the fence.

A few years ago the PS3 would win the reliability contest hands down. Since about 2 years ago, they're both equally reliable so it comes down to your choice of games and add-ons (Move vs. Kinect, PSN vs Live, etc.). If you have the cash, get both.

3 years against the Red Ring of Death - the hardware failure that most plagued the early 360s. However, both PS3 and 360 have been pretty much redesigned since launch and are, far as I know, pretty comparable in the reliability stakes.

Nekkid Kinect! w00t!! :D

By all accounts it still is good, but not quite the messianic be-all and end-all that fans hoped for. 1,000 cars... sure, but 600 of them look pants. New tracks... cool, but the ones from the old games look like they came straight out of the old games etc. I also lost days on good old GT4, but my personal opinion is that the GT franchise has gotten stale.

I guess I'm going to have to do more reading before I decide.
You can never do enough research. Frack, it took me 3 months to research my last sunglasses acquisition. :o

Touch choice, they are both great systems. Too bad you can't get both...

If you must, just flip a coin.

I would lean towards the PS3 ONLY because I like Japanese Philosophy...but I also love my 360...argh!

I'm not sure that Sony subscribes to that philosophy though. Between the two, I'd say that MS is the lesser of two evils, and that's saying a lot.

and what was the end result??:D

Ah yes the Red Ring of Death was the thing I was worried about. That is what my friends that purchased the XBox moaned about all the time. It got me convinced to not buy one of these consoles until they (A) got a little cheaper and (B) got more reliable. Nice to hear from more than one of you that these initial problems have been reasonably addressed.

That would be pretty cool. The Kinect is that motion sensor thingy that you put on the TV that the universities are using in robotics now right? Watching her bounce around nekkid would be pretty fun :D

Darnit. I moved from GT2 straight to GT4 and was totally blown away by how far it had progressed. I was hoping for a similar jump from GT4 to GT5 because it spanned different consoles.

LOL you're like me. I research endlessly before making a decision on something. At least I'm always happy with what I purchase when I eventually purchase it though :D

Yup I suppose I'm just going to have to look at what sort of games there are, what sort of GBs I can get with each one for my money and what kind of accessories there are.

Thanks guys for the inputs so far. By all means keep the information coming though. Every bit helps. :D

...which is the only reason I persist in torturing myself! No word of a lie, I've never suffered buyer's remorse after an expensive purchase; sunnies, beds, televisions, laptops, game consoles, home theatres... you name it. Any time such a purchase looms my wife threatens to leave me. I console myself in knowing that she'd have a really ****ty hair dryer if I wasn't so inclined. Anything that works with any form of electricity takes a disproportionate amount of pondering regardless of the price. :o

I've been itching to upgrade from my PS2 for quite some time now (I guess the Wii doesn't count :p). What put me off was limited gaming time these days.

Then a month ago I played around with my nephew's PS3 - and was very impressed with the multimedia and internet capabilities. So I bought one - and pretty much shelved my Tvix media player in the process.

Oh, and the games rock! :D

bought one of the first PS3's 160gig, 3years ago and its in mint condition and working order. YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG, WITH A PS3 - these things are made to last.

You're entering this generation at what I see as the third quarter of it's life cycle. I really don't think the current generation consoles will see another 5 years.
IMO, go for the console with the best games - which I think is the 360. There are only a hand full of exclusives remaining between the platforms so either one would do.

It is a lot of money, so I will be honest. I have had 3 Xboxes already. The one's DVD rom died, the other had the lens die (thrice). I have never ever had RROD.

I am currently playing on an Xbox Elite console, while my Pro console is in for repairs.

I have no idea why my luck with Xboxes suck so much. I don't own a PS3, but if you want reliability, I can't vouch for an Xbox.
