Shank : given the hit Sony is taking on each console at the moment..At least a year, maybe 2.. and since this is South Africa.. maybe 3 years.

i personally would not get one now ... and also so called PS exclusives like GTA are no longer PS exclusives ... (i think GTA was a PS exclusive) ... begs the question why get a PS3 ... when i see a game that makes me drool on the PS3 then i will buy it ... right now its performing at worst fps than the PS3 in the same games ... (check IGN reviews for the same games on both X360 and PS3)
And if you got a 1080i TV its gonna downscale your graphics to 480P not upscale it ... (can someone confirm this, has it been sorted out) ... so if i were you id wait a bit before just jumping in and spending R6500 ....

Those are imports and most probably will not be supported by SK in this country.
The PS3 gets released in March 2007 (www.playstation.co.za)
Any import will also be a NTSC version which means you won't be able to buy local games or swap with your mates. Rather wait and then after you recover from the price tag get a Xbox

Games are region free (unless the developer decides to build it into the game), DVDs and Blu-rays are region specific

However like you said it is still region locked for Blu-Ray then so you can't rent Blu-Rays here and watch them.... I still say wait until the local release. 1 month now./

In the UK Sonys marketing tactic is to sell the PS3 with a free Casino ROyale game, hope we have that special to!
Nope it is to sell the PS3 with a Casino Royale Blu- Ray movie....
I have no idea if that is going to apply here but I would say there is a 90% chance. It's packaged inside the box.

Firstly JK, Casino Royale is a Bly-Ray movie, it's not a game.
Secondly Phil Harrison of Sony has himself said that Sony cannot afford to drop the price of the PS3 before mid 2008, the production costs are just too high (They're already losing ~$500 per console). They might offer bundles and specials, but, there will be o price drops for at least a year, if not 18 months.
Lastly, Shank please don't blindly commit R6300 of you hard earned money to a PS3 without fully understanding what you're committing to, because inevitably you'll end up selling it in disgust to buy a 360.

You got it all wrong! I was asking how long before the price drops so that i could afford 1. Its way to expensive at the moment so i will have to wait. To be honest, buying one for that price is plain dumb.
Im a have always gone to sony, but would also like the xbox360, but hey who can afford both.

I think you're confusing a few (completely unrelated) things.
1. The PS3 has both HDMI and Component output.
2. The component output is limited to 1080i resolution, the HDMI offers up to 1080p
3. A set that has no HDMI input will be limited to 1080i resolution, (but will probably be a native 720p set in any case).
4. There is a copy protection system incorporated in Blu-ray and HD-DVD which allows content producers to limit the resolution of the analogue output (component) to 480/540p. This is supposed to limit the possibility of piracy, but at the moment NO content producers have indicated that they will use this in the forseeable future. And it relates only to the use of analogue connectivity and HDMI. If you have a 720p TV set and connect via HDMI, you will never see this issue. NB: This relates to both PS3 and the current XBOX with a HD-DVD drive - except that the PS3 has an HDMI port
edit: oh yeah... this "image constraint token", if it is ever used, will be for movies, not games.

Well, not totally true, MS has been trimming costs for a while and word is that currently the 360 is currently covering costs, which is why they're reluctant to cut the price.
Apparently the initial cost of the 360 was around $500 a unit (a year ago). The PS3 is closer to $900 a unit.
Consider that a stand alone Blu-Ray player costs ~ $1000.
EDIT: No Arf, adamr is right. The PS3 does not having any hardware scaling functionality (360 does, it's called ANA) There was a lot of noise about it 2/3 weeks ago (to lazy to find link) Basically, if the game/movie does not natively support the resolution of the device, it defaults down to 480p.

Oh ok, I see... if you have a set that doesn't support 720p but does support 1080i the box cannot upscale a native 720p game to 1080i.
You're right.. that's a glitch...
but how many of these sets are out there? 1080i native sets will be CRT HDTVs. Lots of those in SA :sarcasm:

All PS3's manufactured recently lost the PS2 hardware in favor of software emulation, also soon cell and rsx will move to 65nm and wifi+blutooth chips are going into one silicon possibly from toshiba. All of these should bring down prices, but in SA that doesn't have to be the case and probably won't be.
