PS4 vs Xbox One: Digital game price comparison

I only get games on sale. Gone are the days of spending 900 on a pre order title...

Same here.

Bought Destiny on digital as my very first retail game purchase because it was cheaper than physical disc version at the time. Then just before launch it suddenly jumped into crazy territory as well but fortunately they honoured the pre-order price.

Single Player games you'll find me only buying on special or second hand though.

XBone wins console wars round 2 IMO.
Way more games on the shelves too no doubt if the 360 was anything to go by.
That said, prices have to drop all round (Wii U, PS3, Xbone and PC) to be taken seriously.

I don't see how the price of one McDonalds meal per month for 2 - 6 games is a joke?

I mean that's the best deal around even if you only play one of the six games for an hour.

Let me chime in. I think it depends on the argument of quality vs quantity. I would argue that one should rather play fewer games that one really wants to play. If there is one or two games that you really want to play badly per year, even if they cost R1000 each, rather get them, than end up paying the same for 20 mediocre titles.

I'm sort of with you on this, maybe more out of necessity. I can't afford to go and pay those prices for each game. I will pay it for my main game though and that is Gran Turismo. The others I can collect when I can.

Although I know where you are coming from and completely agree when it comes to R600 purchases for virtually no money at all PS+ has exposed me to some fantastic games that I would never even have tried otherwise.

I think thats the really great part about it. Even if 19/20 games sucked or didn't suit my style that one gem that I found in between really makes it worth it.

The only reason the 360 made a wave at all was because it launched ahead of the ps3 at a much cheaper price.

This time around the ps4 launched at the same time and the xbone is more expensive.

Going on the price of games, which is by far the majority of expenditure, the PS4 came out more expensive on almost everything.

But then you have to upgrade your system requirement all the time.

No you don't. If you wan't to play console level graphics on yor desktop a current midrange level desktop would be fine to compete. Should you however have big dick envy and wanto play everything at super high real life settings you are gonna have to give up a bit beer money for that high end gpu that brings koeberg to a standstill.

Playing games on max graphics doesn't require a R7+k video card at all. At least not at 1080p. I have an HD7970 (and an i5-3570K with 8GB RAM) and can run all my games maxed out. I don't monitor my framerates, but I would immediately be concerned if the games didn't play smoothly.

who de feck plays on max all the time let a lone upgrade all the time?

madness.

My PC's about 6 years old and the only thing I've upgraded is the GPU to a R2k one about 2 years ago. Still runs all current games great. The "constant upgrade needed" is a total fallacy these days, with such powerful PCs being standard.

Look at The Evil Within system requirements for pc:

Of that nothing is very onerous; and if you don't have those items, you'll have to *gasp* play it a lower res/detail, say equivalent to console quality. Oh wait you're right... that does suck :)

My HD7850 plays current games at great speeds/detail (usually not top, but very high) on my 2560 x 1600 30" monitor. Cost me around R2k a few years ago.

How do you figure? Retail games are pretty much the same prices across the board and still the majority of sales.

This thread only focuses on digital and the only locally. Internationally the price of games are virtually identical.

faaak! >R1000 per game? for sure the game developers also need to get paid for the good work they've done, but that is just nasty!
now they're just taking liberties on the loyalty of the console gamers.
if u want 10 or so good games, then even the odd pc upgrade every 2 years or so doesnt seem so bad.
they probly know that they can't charge crazy prices for PC games, coz pc gamers will just find another way to get the game, which for console games may not be as easy?
and the reasoning behind why digital download versions of games aren't significantly cheaper than boxed versions in the stores? Suppose they want to protect their retailers... but really that can only go so far.

Again a very South African problem this retailer protection nonsense.

Every other country as realised it's more money in their own pocket when offering digital and the retailers are largely unaffected because some people will always bug physical.

Especially in a county like ours with caps and 3G everywhere.

Bethesda doesn’t tell you what resolution the 4GB VRAM is for. We could be talking about 4GB required if you’re playing in say 4K? 4GB seems extremely bloated if that’s only for 1080P. Metro 2033 Redux hits between 1 – 2GB VRAM usage at 1440P on average. Crysis 3 is hungrier, reaching up to 2.5 – 2.8 GB on 1440P with high levels of MSAA.

It’s possibly an insight into how the Playstation 4′s and Xbox One’s unified RAM has been divided up for the games assets. While the consoles only have between 5GB – 5.5GB, we can safely assume much of this has gone towards the graphical assets of the Evil Within. If the PC version sports better textures and graphics (which it should), then it could account for the extra memory. However, they optimize the game for the consoles architecture not the PC. Like with Shadow of Mordor, and all new cross platform releases, there's going to be a considerable bump in PC hardware requirements, for very little benefit, the medium PC settings will unfortunately not reflect the console version but will be sub par in most cases.
