PS5

I finally got to play PS5 and Astro's Playroom last night.

Even though it's not my kind of game it's a nice way to show off everything that the controller can do. And wow it really is impressive what's packed into the controller. However, I couldn't make it through one evening's gaming without the batteries dying completely. I googled it a bit and apparently it's only games like Astro's Playroom that uses a lot of the controller that causes it to drain so quickly. But I see the battery life is really not good on the controllers.

The controllers feel more premium than the XBox Series controllers but it's not nearly as comfortable. In the ideal world one would like the Series controllers with triggers of the PS5 controllers. The Series controllers I charge once a week and asymmetrical thumbsticks just feel so much nicer.

Besides the controller difference the only really difference is the interface of the console. PS can really do with Quick Resume. It's amazing how you miss it when it's not there anymore. XBox can really do with some of the settings that the PS has. I mean I can select that I want inverted Y and it will use it in different games. I love that!

It also looks like the PS is more user friendly, especially for people who aren't technically inclined but the XBox allows for a lot more customisation. Almost an Apple vs Windows thing going on here.

Will start Demon's Souls today. Can't wait! Demon's Souls and Bloodborne are the two biggest reasons for finally getting the PS5.

Yeah the controller technology really is a showcase and Astro is great for that.

The centred sticks and the fact they are convex is the deal breaker for me, in every other way it’s better than the Xbox one other than the battery. Sticks can be changed but they can’t be moved sadly.

Interface wise while I do find it more “sexy” on the PS5 it’s actually less practical/user friendly and the Xbox wins with its utilitarian nature. My kids especially have a hard time navigating the PS5 with some silly stuff like not just switching users when you hit the button or holding it to turn it off but having to jump through multiple screens to do simple stuff like that.

I like the “presets” thing the PS5 does that applies globally, quite a nice feature that.

The PS5 does do Quick Resume though? What I would really love is if it could do it between multiple users though.

I believe that Odyssey is quite the ride, especially with the dialogue system.

Although I heard that Valhalla is a bit of a let-down, but we'll see when I get there. The journey is still a while away for me.

I enjoyed Odyssey, but after 40hrs it got a bit boring and it felt like I was still only about halfway into the game, shelved it as I felt it had too much bloat for my liking...

Congrats man. I'm really, really enjoying my PS5 too, which I got fairly recently (the GoW bundle).

However, I too am concerned about the ergonomics of the DualSense controller. Having not played my Series X for a few weeks, I briefly played last night and was surprised at how much I preferred the comfort of the Series controller. For my hands at least, it's not even a comparison - Xbox blows PS out of the water for comfort.

Another thing that grinds my gears: after buying the official wireless headsets for both Xbox and PS5, I am left with a MS one that is a phenomenal product in basically every respect (audio, mic, comfort, ear cup size, bass, on-device controls etc.) and a Sony one that sounds and feels like a cheap piece of garbage (and needs a USB dongle in the PS5). I cannot believe Sony thought that was a suitable level of quality.

For now the PS5 is the main console because I have so many exclusive games to finish. But after that I'll definitely acquire as much as I can on Xbox.

Valhalla is substantially better paced than Odyssey imo. Odyssey was a major grind. Fortunately I was a PC gamer at the time and could easily modify the rate that XP is earned. It only needed a modest bump to feel better calibrated and less grindy, and it made a world of difference. I had a blast with it.

The PS5 doesn't have anything like Xbox's Quick Resume. On Series X you can switch between running games in the blink of an eye, and return to a game (after turning on the console) as quickly as opening a running app on your computer. It's very cool.

The Elite controller comes with an app that gives you customisable global settings and different controller profiles at the flick of a switch. Once you get used to this and those additional rear buttons, it's really difficult to enjoy any other controller.

The PS5 controller and the haptic feedback is awesome, but the novelty quickly wore off. I generally disable vibration anyway to extend battery life and improve precision.

It's not a PS5 fault though. I can't even play with normal Xbox controllers because I'm so used to the Elite...

The sound from the headset isn’t bad, but every other aspect is ridiculous I agree.

The fact they cost the same money while the Xbox has Bluetooth and far superior quality is quite astounding.

So it only does it for the main game you are playing? Maybe it’s because I’ve mostly stuck to Horizon only that I haven’t noticed, but I do recall that being the case from launch.

It would eat the already limited storage which is likely why it’s not a thing.

(I do have a Series X as well just for clarity, and even there it would be nice if it supported it across users).

I have an Elite and yeah it does have global presets for buttons but I was referring more to the settings like difficulty and inversion etc on the PS5.

I disable vibration on the Xbox in many cases because it’s so bad, but with the DualSense I just lowered it because it adds so much dimension.

By default I map my stick clicks to the rear panels and oddly haven’t found I miss that too much because the PS5 does feel more clicky and accurate but I’ve also not played a game that needs me to constantly hold it in.

On that topic kudos to Gorilla Games for adding a wealth of customisation options to Horizon for choosing hold or toggle and setting up auto run etc which makes the game much less of a chore.

Something else that has been utterly broken since the PS5 entered the mix is my HDMI-CEC which simply no longer works properly for anything. PS5 also doesn’t turn off the TV when you finally got it switched to that channel.

I think it depends on what sort of games you're playing. For a console that has spent time not being used, I would assume it will only bother keeping the last game you were playing in memory. Haven't actually checked though.

And it can present minor issues. In Valhalla and FC6 the Ubisoft store is busted if you quick resume the game. Although it's the Ubi store so I couldn't care less.

Storage felt very restrictive to me on PS5. But I added the FireCuda 530 1TB NVMe so that's sorted now. PS5 load times are actually marginally better with a super fast m.2 drive according to a recent Digital Foundry review I saw.

Nope. On Xbox it’s simple.

On PS, I don’t get the option to make my brothers console my main PS5 and vice-versa.

It’s really simple for the fact it’s officially supported and even documented by Sony.

It's very simple on PS5, I've been using game share for almost a year now.
There's an option right there in the settings to make which ever console you're game sharing from, the main console.

Yeah I have no intention of spending more money on it since it’s only there for the handful of PS-only games.

It’s great to have access to all my old titles though and a lot of kid-friendly games so I’m probably going to have to buy a third controller at some point.

If anything it would be a normal cheap external for the “backup” factor and the PS1-PS4 games.

The Wicher 3 on special going for R269.

If you don't have the last-gen version for the free upgrade you can get it for this price. The two DLCs are not included though just the base game which is just over 100GB.
