PS5

Woah... 8K

I wonder what this thing will cost. So they will have 3 versions of the PS5 when this thing releases. The main "performance targets" make the Pro sound like a GPU upgrade.

It's stupid. It's the same as the PS4 to PS4 Pro. They should only do major releases to prevent market segmentation. The game you buy looks and plays identically on the same gen no matter what.

It's not stupid at all. There will be a pro and normal. The PS5 needs legs to go to 2028.

Not gonna get there with HW alone. If the Switch has taught us one thing: Software drives hardware. All this 8K (Ok that is pure marketing speak - get 60FPS right [and standard] on 4K, heck even 2K) and the other upgrades... is it really necessary at this point? Were there even 10 can-only-run-on-PS5 games this gen?

PS5 is outpacing PS4 sales at the moment (which is like the 5th best selling console of all time). End of this year it will be much further ahead I think. They have the hardware and the software…

The current PS 5 also "supports 8K", yet drops below 1080p with FF XVI. It's just a marketing bullet point.

Uh are you sure about the "drops below 1080" bit? For PS5? That's Switch hometurf.

Edit
yep, it's true

Sony, thx for the upgrade. It makes sense now. Wow

This is a bit of a silly statement. I'm actually playing the game at the moment. It can drop to 720 to maintain 60fps during combat at some points in performance mode. Quality mode is much better and the preferred mode at the moment. But it's a fast paced action game, no one is pausing to count pixels.

You can watch the DF analysis if you like, they gave the game very high praise.

Yeah, I have a PS5 as well, and don't think we need a Pro. I think the CPU and GPU are both strong enough for great gameplay. The 720p is unfortunate and I hope it's not something that becomes common.

These sort of performance discussions are mostly used as a cheap shot to fuel platform war BS. Majority of people actually playing the game loves it.

But on the PS5 Pro, while we might not need it it gives more choice to the user, which I don't see as a bad thing. It could potentially introduce a price drop for the base PS5 as well. In any case it would be a day 1 buy for me ;P

Was there a PS Vita pro and 'normal'? Was there a PS1, PS2 or PS3? Was there a Switch Pro? Nah. It's just crazy.

They can optimize a lot through software and if the thing is too slow then do a major version upgrade, call it the PS6. Let that one be the 8K console. There is no need to wait for 2028.

Besides as said, the cross-gen period has been very long and there are few PS5 only games.
Secondly there is a recession and even gamers aren't buying 3090/4090 cards. That market is enthusiast and console need not compete with BS "ray tracing" at 4K res crowd. Console is an appliance device, you buy it and get the PS5 experience, then you get a PS6 experience.

If you want pro get a gaming rig.

Poor optimization.

No it segments the market. Now you get a different performance and quality on PS5 and Pro. That's nonsense. You already pay more for PS5 games than PS4 ones. Keep it consistent. That was always the point of console gaming, you get the device, and you get same experience and you pay a premium for the games. PS5 games are like $60 now for the most basic versions. And that's also where this BS comes from, you get a deluxe and ultimate versions of games, with the latter priced at $90 sometimes.

You are an enthusiast and are not 99% of the market out there which is casual. And you should just get a gaming rig, that's all. You can purchase a RTX 4090 and next year get an RTX 5090, most people don't want to play that silly game.

That is impressive.

Seems like the supply-chain nightmare is finally over. They're firing on all cylinders with hardware: PSVR (what happened to that - seems so quiet), That... remote play thing, PS5 Pro, and the current Diskless + OG PS5 [I think they switched over to a different die size already?]. Seems a bit much for me. They just need to get the software rolling, and not just this cinematic single player stuff. Seems like the indie-like attitude of Sony-owned studios is long gone.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Console Covers Are Already Being Scalped Online

Opportunistic people are attempting to sell the $65 Spider-Man 2 PS5 faceplates for more than double their regular price.

With preorders now open for the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 console and DualSense controller, listings on eBay have begun popping up for the PS5 faceplates. Brand-new, these faceplates have an MSRP of $65, but on eBay, there are already listings for over $200. It's worth noting that the price listed isn't a guarantee that these sellers will actually get $200 in return, but at least one person has paid $149 for the two pieces of protective plastic.

Several of these listings also have "best offer" options, so while there's a chance that you won't have to pay the advertised price on eBay, you'll probably still have to pay over the MSRP so that the seller can make a quick buck. These faceplates are reportedly selling out quickly, and if you're looking to give your PS5 an arachnid-themed makeover, you can check out our Marvel's Spider-Man 2 preorder hub for stock updates.

Scalpers targeting limited-edition PS5 gear isn't too surprising, as during the early days of the console's lifecycle, stock shortages of the PS5 were exacerbated by scalpers buying up any available units and reselling them for a profit. As of January 2023, Sony has declared the PS5 shortage to be effectively over, and in a recent update, the company confirmed that 40 million PS5s have been sold worldwide.

New PS5 Firmware Beta Starts Today, Bigger SSD and Dolby Atmos Support

In addition, a new accessibility feature allows you to assign a second PS5 controller to a single account. "This feature introduces a new way for you to enjoy games collaboratively with others or help a friend or child navigate a particularly challenging section of a game," the PlayStation Blog explains. Then, the PS5 controller's haptic feedback can be utilised at a system level, with vibrations linked to receiving notifications, booting up a game, and reaching the end of a scrollable list. "This optional feature enhances immersion and is particularly useful for players with some level of sight or hearing disability, who appreciate the additional feedback on their inputs."

At a glance, the new PS5 firmware update beta includes:

  • Support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs (up to 8TB)
  • Use a second controller for assistance
  • System UI haptic feedback
  • Support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices
  • Party UI update
  • Share Screen preview
  • Join friends' game sessions easily
  • Game Hub tournaments tile
  • React to messages with emojis
  • Search for games in your library
  • Game Help improvements
  • New Discover features
  • Mute PS5 beep sound

Those of you who own Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices can now also take advantage of 3D Audio through soundbars, TVs, and home theatre systems by enabling the option in your Audio Output settings on the PS5.
