PS5

Pretty interesting, playing ps4 games on 50 inch qled with HDR etc well under 200w for everything. Any ps5 native stuff pushes it to just under 300w.

Finally got around to watching that PS Expo.

Wow...talk about underwhelming. A bunch of mostly forgettable titles capped off with some hardware nobody wants.

Hopefully the second half of 2023 sees some decent announcements.

Considering that I’ve only heard about the expo on this thread; I figured it was underwhelming.

Honestly, don't bother. Rather look at any recently uploaded trailers that look like they might interest you than wasting a whole hour+ of your life.

And this is what we got in place of E3 :D

Who cares? Apple has never position its computers for gamers or games. It’s like saying a fish is bad at climbing trees…

For sure, just asking specifically because it’s not something I look at.

I play the odd Apple Arcade game or Magic Arena and it does that perfectly well which about as much gaming as I would ever do on the platform.

Thing is Apple could very easily pivot and get more serious putting an M*-chip in an Apple TV or something like that.

I seem to recall some news when the latest iPhone came out saying how it outperforms the PS4 Pro (I think) so it’s an interesting stat to see where the M1/2 would slot in.

Also to say they’ve never positioned themselves isn’t quite fair, they just do it very differently. I seem to recall Apple Arcade has made more money than Sony and Nintendo together, which would mean Apple is winning at games without even trying.

Apple’s GPU performance isn’t that far behind AMD and nVidia. They lack ray tracing and acceleration and that kind of thing but you can bet they are pouring heavy R&D into it. Also it seems they’ve recently gotten back to pushing Apple Arcade.

Is that the SoC directly or bad development for Macs though?

Probably both. It's not a focus for them, so why design a gaming gpu?

In raw power (tflops) the m2 max seems to match the ps5 on the gpu front, but barely exceeds 60fps at 1080p in old games.

Isn't that m2 max platform horrifically expensive? I only have experience with M1, I remember the stuff that did run native (not many) was incredibly efficient.

Also I think it's awesome they let Sauron play games at his age. Want to retire to a care home like his one day. He's just grumpy because they didn't serve jelly today.

Yeah but you can’t really say that it’s bad definitively. How many frames are lost due to poor optimisation of both the games and the drivers? Have you tried gaming on Linux recently? Same nVidia GPU, half the frame rate. I agree that gaming is not a primary focus for them, but rather compute power, and they’ll lag behind because of that, but considering all of the other applications for running game engines (other than games) it’s money left on the table. I still think they’ll surprise everyone, this was the same kind of naysaying we heard when the rumours that they were going to ditch Intel circulated.

Also I just realised that the “old games” you’re talking about are probably x86 games being emulated? We know that Sony can’t even figure out how to emulate PS3 games on the PS5 yet so that’s quite impressive.

Another thing to consider is that even the benchmarking tools aren’t necessarily made equally due to the different platforms.

Yes! It's basically essential before you play Forbidden West, unless you like being confused

It's available on PS Plus Extra, so if you have a subscription you don't need to pay for it. You can also normally pick up physical copies at Cash Crusaders for cheap.

I’ve started playing zero dawn now. I’ve paused GoT as I got annoyed at not being able to beat the real lady in a boss fight. I’ll come back to it later.

Will see how Zero Dawn is and then move on to West.
