Yeah agreed. Like I said earlier it’s not comparing apples. Sony is pushing hardware and ms are in the service business. If they could get gamepass on PlayStation today they’d do it in a heartbeat and I think they probably tried already.

Its difficult to move console platforms as most of us are moving or have already moved away from a physical disc to a digital collection in the previous gen so switching means losing that content which is what the games as a service hopes to address.

I just hope that we don’t lose games in the long term and that there’s some preservation effort by the big boys.

Yeah but the point was rather that the sales don't matter nearly as much as people think.

There's a good reason Microsoft hasn't just given up even being behind in sales because they are more than making their money back and while I don't expect an immediate flip around in the market I do expect things to start shifting a bit.

Not to mention Playstation paying Microsoft to run their own network also eats into their profits and Microsoft just smiles all the way.

As a "division" Xbox matches Playstation easily on profits, but as an entire business Sony is dwarfed by Microsoft and if they aren't concerned about that they aren't very bright.

Also people confuse the issue comparing Xbox (console) sales vs PS5 console sales, because Xbox as a platform is both Console + PC + Cloud and that's an entirely different equation and again underlines why sales figures in and of themselves as measure of revenue is really a bit silly.

Doesn't help you make a billion dollars in revenue and only one dollar in profits.

People like @prod like to laugh, but it's pretty clear they don't understand basic economics if they find it funny.

Yup I seem to recall it came out in the court documents that Sony were the ones blocking it and Microsoft wanted it there.

Here's a shocker for the people who want to call me a fanboy but if the Xbox games were available on Playstation I would likely have chosen the Playstation as my platform in a world where I wouldn't need both.

I hate the OS but the fact it has VR and the better controller at this point in time (even with the silly sticks) makes it the better platform to play games on.

But I have an Xbox because I like the games it has to offer and since it's the cheaper offering between Game Pass & Game Sharing I do all my multi-platform stuff on there and keep the PS5 for the exclusives.

I loved those games. My first 2 plats iirc. Played and platted ascension and 3 remastered recently and now getting through ragnarok to keep my god of war plat collection complete.

The very definition of FUD imo.

The hint is that Xbox profits are labeled as 'accountability margin' - a metric that no one outside of MS knows exactly how to interpret. Congrats, you are looking at 2 different metrics on the same chart. MS does not officially report their profits afaik - and I’m like 90% sure neither do the other two. Furthermore, financial reports are way more complex than I pretend to understand, for instance, Bungie does not fall under 'Playstation' but under 'Sony' and thus won't be part of SIE financial results. MS has their own shenanigans to include certain things and not others.

Microsoft doesn’t conventionally release it, but this being the year of court battles more information is out there than they wanted to be.

As per your very Twitter thread linked it’s not that the data is bad or wrong, but rather that it’s extrapolated from what they have and compared on different metrics.

Regardless the only point that stands is that revenue <> profit and that console sales when comparing Xbox to PlayStation don’t make sense since they aren’t playing the same game.
