Psoraisis

Yip, this is a pesky problem, one I also deal with.
Mine started in my late teens. I have a handful of small spots on the forearms and scalp.
I've been on a number of potions...all prescription, including
Dovate
Dovate mixed with Salicylic acid
Diprosalic
Dovonex (cream) - not sure if you can get this in SA anymore
Calcipotriol (scalp solution)- as far as I know you cant get this in SA..at least that's what my dermatologist says..??

I found Dovonex and Calcipotriol worked the best for me...I was able to get them overseas a few years back while visiting family.

I've heard that diet definitely can play a role, especially wheat and diary? I've done some "detox" months where I've eliminated so called trigger foods, but haven't found any improvement. I'll keep on trying.

Ah yes, I remember Dovonex from years back when given to me by my dermatologist. Also haven't seen or heard about it in years.

Does anyone know if generics or equivalents of the following are available in SA ?
Dovonex
Calcipotriol scalp solution?

Oh right, almost forgot until I read it here: alcohol is bad for it.

At one stage I started getting it under my arms and had to switch to Sanex roll-on which was alcohol free. The itching soon stopped and marks disappeared. Stuck to that for about 6 months and started using regular deodorants again - no problems yet.

Sun.
No stress.

You might as well say that to cure albinism.

Too much sun is often the trigger.

I have had psoriasis for years and have tried just about everything from tree oils to Methotrexate and something stronger (for the life of me I cannot remember the name though). What I have found to work is:
1. Reduce stress.
2. Reduce alcohol.
3. Stop smoking.
4. Eat healthily.
5. Exercise.
6. Avoid cortisone - will improve symptoms, but it will come back worse.
7. I have UVA treatment every now and then to control it.
8. I use Xamiol (prescription) and it clears the scalp completely. This stuff is brilliant.
9. I use Dovobet (prescription). Improves, but does not clear.

I have a good friend that suffered from this badly. I don't know what medication he takes, but the UVA treatment and being in the sun (so nbfs - what are you talking about?) made a huge improvement in his condition.

I will ask him next time I see him - not something you chat about around the braai normally.

Too much sun = sunburn. Sunburn can make the psoriasis much worse. New lesions, those white "scales". You want frequent sunlight but in short stints IMHO.

My dad had it, and when I asked him about it, he just grunted and changed the topic. Does it hurt?

Look, I can't argue with you. I'm just going on what my mate did and said. And we are not talking about sunburn - just being in the sun for enough time. Although, after the UV treatments (at UCT medical facility if I recall correctly), he pretty much could soak up the sun for long periods.

But regardless - this was after he went for extensive medical advice. Anyone who suffers from this condition must go to a reputable dermatologist to get the best advice.

As far as I know it itches - but most significantly, it can be almost "disfiguring". It's rather unsightly, and I was always impressed with my friend for carrying on like he didn't care about the rather large red patches on his arms and legs. Gained huge respect for him for that to be honest.

My dad changed his whole diet: no dairy , no gluten , no red meat, lots of veg and it went away, and he got a lot healthier at the same time.

His staple was pap and spinach......now that is something i couldn't do

quiet a few patients actually report this. One of my friends as well.

Hi guys. Does anyone here get it in the groin area? I get it there, called inverse psoriasis ... but it's just normal psoriasis. I'll tell you first time I got it there, I kakked myself. Anyway, what remedies do you use? I use Persivate, but I'm very weary of skin atrophy, so I don't use it often. I wait until it flairs up pretty bad, then use the cream and it's gone within half a day to a day (lesions usually up to 2 days).

Also, can you guys recommend a dermatologist in Jhb. I need to get treatment and fill prescriptions before I go to the US.

Thanks.

I dont know any derms in JHB so I cant help you there.

You dont have to worry about skin atrophy but apply it when necessary only that is good practice. Specifically where exactly is the psoriasis? is it on your genitals or the surrounding areas ? This is important as it can limit the options you have

How can it limit the options?

I have had psoriasis since I was 6 months old.

Methotrexate worked quite well for me but I had to stop because it was busy screwing around with my liver function.
UVA, I did last year just before my wedding just to give my body a shock treatment for a while. (It works but it gets expensive)

Currently the only thing that works for me is Diprosalic ointment and Zinplex tablets. This combination keeps everything under control.
I have tried Dovobet and Dovonex before as well without any success.
