PSP is only PS2 ports - There are lots of original games on psp... locoroco anyone? And even if you just buy ports, at least you can play them without lugging a tv, console and controllers around.
You mentioned games, scaled down PS2 games, you do know that there is over R130 million PS2 sold (highest sold console in history?) with a software library of over 1900 games with plenty of them considered top notch...it's a real compliment saying the PSP is a scaled down PS2 versions...but if you got at games like God of War, Resistance, GT, LBP and Killzone, not only are they not scaled down versions of PS2 versions they could be considered to be scaled down versions of PS3 games...
I'm not knocking ports as if it's a terrible idea to take incredibly successful games and move them onto a mobile device. What I am saying is that for me and a lot of other people, if I have to choose how I'm going to play a game I'm going to rather play it on the big LCD with the dual analog stick controls that fit nicely in my hand.
For me the selection of good unique games matters because it has to be able to compete against other consoles when I'm at home, and the PSP has a lot fewer of those than the DS. We can list Locoroco and Patapon, and after that the selection gets sparse. I liked Patapon, I liked Lumines, I also like Jeanne D'Arc, I even liked Hot Shots Golf but those just aren't enough to support a whole console.
When I said I'd recommend the PSP if I "spent a lot of time in my parents car", it comes down to how often you actually go out and play on your PSP? If I'm going out, I'm generally going somewhere where there's something to do other than play console games I could be playing at home. The only time this isn't true is if it's something like a week holiday and it's nice to be able to play something in the evening. Then the DS has the advantage that you can share it with a non-gamer as well who can play something like Bust-a-move on it.
This is why I feel the PSP's key demographics are:
"But Moooommmm, I don't want to go out, I want to play God of War... fine, I'll sit in the car and play"
"But Moooommmm, I want to play on the PS3, why can't I use the family TV now?"
"But Moooommmm, I don't want to go to bed now, I want to stay up and play some more on the 360"
And if I was in that market then I'd definitely put the PSP top of my list.
