Haven't seen a thread on this topic, so I decided to start one for the handheld console war.

PSP VS DS

To sum up the pros and cons of each device. . .

PSP

-Basically a handheld ps2. Awesome graphics.
-Battery life sucks due to high demanding games. About 3 hours a sitting.
-Game library not that great

-Easily scratched screen
-Great multimedia machine.
-Wifi support.

Nintendo Ds.
-Graphics are basically that of the PSX
-Battery life up to 10 hours (Last time i checked)

-Clamshell design/ Screens are protected.
-Touch screen.
-Excellent and big game library. Excellent 1st party games.
-Wifi support.

Just to make this clear, we're speaking about the console and the intellectual property of the respective companies and games made exclusively for the console. Not the homebrew apps/emulator as that is piracy, and not the property of Sony.

Your thoughts/opinions?

I think that Nintendo wins here as they have an awesome lineup of games that none can rival. Even though the graphics are lacking the games are just sheer fun. Also the psp games are basically just ports from the ps2 and are not as great. I think Sony just assumes that if the graphics are awesome, it automatically is an awesome game. This can be seen with their consoles throughout the board . . The battery life of the ds just trumps the PSP, 3 hours is just not enough when playing your favourite game. Due to this, many have turned to homebrew emulators which is not the intellectual property of Sony. When looking for a good multimedia machine - Go for the PSP. If you want games - Go for the DS.

Have to say the DS wins, the PSP isnt that good for multimedia though, you have to convert all your videos to mp4 and alot of the games are just PS2 ports, the DS has an awesome lineup of unique games and thats why i bought one

I suppose you don't have a PSP. You don't have to convert videos, you can even stream them from your pc via wifi, any format.

What's the use in having "unique" games if they're no fun to play?

If you're the more serious type of gamer, I'd say go for the PSP. It has an awesome library of really great games. Great for watching movies, browsing the internet etc. as well.

If you like the kiddy type games more, get a DS.

Contrary to popular belief, the DS is not a "kiddy" game system. I see people of all ages having a great time with it. I suppose you don't have a DS. Why would want to be a "serious" gamer with a handheld device while on the go? Thats why you buy a PS/XBOX. I think your definition of "fun" is way off here.

i do have a psp but havent played it in a year, my idea of fun is not a watered down port of whatever's on the consoles. whats the point of a psp if there is always a superior version on other consoles, DS games you wont find anywhere else and just because they're fun doesn't mean they are "kiddy" games

Some of the top rated games on the DS:

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart DS
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Guitar Hero On Tour
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Space Invaders Extreme
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The
Sonic Rush Adventure
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Tetris DS
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Sonic Rush
Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Mmm, now why do these names sound so familiar? Might it be because there are superior versions on other consoles???

Console versions dont use the touchscreen, if the touchscreen is properly made use of the game will play totally different to console versions, the psp has nothing to make it unique, infact the lack of a second analogue stick makes many games more awkward

There are rumors that Microsoft may enter the console market too, with the Zune and Apple. Hm, sounds interesting, may tighten the handheld console wars, and may even give Nintendo a run for its money if this rumor is correct. Wonder if Sony will survive. .

What do you guys think of the PSP Go? Ithink it's a lol. Especially in S.A.

PSP, really the only draw for DS is that its where all the sequels to NES/SNES and SEGA so if you didn't get over thos games that for you, If you like decent graphics and a good shooter or racing get a PSP,
If I was offerd a choice between the two I would take a PSP 1000, if I was given the money, I would upgrade my PC :D

Whatever makes you cum is what I say. Don't think I'll ever get over the Nintendo nostalgia though. A big draw i think are the dualscreens and the touch screen and of course the game library. Hence, the DS. In fact, in theory, the DS is better for fps's because of the touchcreen (A prime example is Metroid:Prime Hunters uses this awesomely). And for racing lol. . . well, lets just say nothing beats Mario kart, especially with friends. They should make more NDS fps's, possibly a Perfect dark sequel from the N64, ahhh the nostalgia, or even 007:Goldeneye also from the N64. Amagad! the awesomeness!

Console versions dont use the touchscreen

Good thing, games would suck if they did...

And not all the games use the touchscreen. What makes Mario Kart so unique? The fact that you can see the map on the other screen? Definitely not better than the Wii version.

Different isn't always good. Just look at all the Wii crap out there.

your'e arguing about stuff that can also be said for psp

sales numbers don't lie. PSP is an also-ran - the games library for DS is far more extensive and better reviewed. DS has a raft of killer multimillion titles, whereas PSP has a scattered handful (monster hunters...um......). DS to me allows for far greater innovation - everything from Brain Training to GTA to Scribblenauts. It seems like most devs just kinda..forgot that PSP was there.

Having millions of titles is not always good if most of them are crap. I checked on IGN. The DS has about 350 titles scoring less than 50%. PSP a lot less.

Also, how much is a handful for you? On IGN there are about 140 games scoring more than 80% on the PSP.

+1

But really, the games issue is a personal choice. For me its PSP. I mean, Tekken, Burnout, Gran Turismo, God of War or on a mobile device? Awesome.

Why would you want to play those games on a handheld if you have the exact same games on your PS3/PS2? Doesn't make sense, they're the exact same, if not diluted on your psp. PSP is better suited for nice racing games though between the two btw.
