Psst ... get cheap music here

But South Africans do not have an iTunes store to access because Apple took issue with South African copyright law.
What did they take issue over?

The costs of setting up, maintaing a store plus additional issues
make it prohibitive in terms of cost. Remember also that Apple
pulled out of SA and has no direct presence here.

I meant what issue they had with South African copyright law.

But there is a catch. As soon as you unsubscribe from the service, you lose access to every track you might have downloaded, plus the music has digital rights management (DRM), which means it cannot be transferred to any device from your phone.

I have to continue paying subscription in order to access that which I paid for? I certainly won't spend my money on a blackmailing system!

This kind of DRM is why piracy exists.

People pirate cos it's just too technical to even begin to decide where to buy your music

eMusic sells music from more than 20,000 labels and 130,000 artists in the universally-compatible MP3 format at an affordable price. We strongly believe in independent music and its culture, and do not currently carry many mainstream, Top 40 artists. If you would like to suggest an addition to the eMusic catalogue, please let us know here. In addition, feel free to contact your favorite labels and tell them you want to buy their music on eMusic.

I am not dropping R130 a month and they don't sell any top 40 music!

Edit:

So they do have a lot of music I want, it is DRM free and they support Linux. Signed up for the $10 - 30 track download options. Cheaper than Musica's R9 a song with DRM protection rubbish.

MTN Loaded portal manager Thabiet Allie says DRM is used to protect the artists from piracy and that MTN has taken a position that DRM will be enforced.
So common sense finally sank in at EMI, but we're too pigheaded/stupid to follow their example.

Emusic.com

I am totally impressed with emusic.com
25 free tracks and 1 free audiobook with a 2 week subscription - just cancel when done if you don't want to pay... awesome selection!

Pretty much all of these services are a rip off. And as for the not being able to access your songs if you unsubscribe....thats just extortion!

The .ru sites are much more friendly :)

Limewire

Some people including me use p2p sharing and that other torrent things.
You say you won't use it for what you going to do but they don't know.

It's not fair to the artists and it's illegal so don't do it.:(

I have no issues with buying music..

BUT if they're going to wrap it in draconian DRM, or DRM of any sort.. well they can think again, I won't buy it.. and at R160 a cd.. I'm not going to buy them either.

Thankfully EMI has realised this and Universal is contemplating doing the same thing.

I have no problem with paying for music, but as someone suggested the whole online music scene is just way to convoluted here in SA at the moment.

Call me old school but I rather prefer to buy CDs at the mo and then rip to MP3. If the files get lost or something I still got my "master CD".

P2P is something that I believe in too. Personally I won't go and waste money buying music I don't like and I must say that with P2P you can get almost any song you want for FREE! and no DRM junk either.

My personal preference is to "preview" a band through P2P or even youtube, the sound quality of the MP3s from P2P are better than youtube (provided you go for the biggest files). If I like their music I will go and buy the CD.

I will not buy a Britney Spears, or Justin Timberlake or any pop type CD unless I like all the songs. These types of artist tend to only have a few good songs ( the singles) and the rest of the album is trash. In this case I won't even waste money on a CD and using P2P is ok IMHO. Then again I don't download such stuff anyway.

Another issue is that some music I can't even find in store but I can get it through P2P. I want to buy a CD without having to go through the whole shipping fiasco so what do I do?

I think that subscription and ad supported music is the future. Let me pay R200 a month or whatever and download as much music as I want.

Its definitely not the future, because it ties a consumer into one supplier and thats just not on.

The future is something like iTunes, without DRM and decently priced songs.. say R5 or so each.

Umm. If the music is DRM free then how are you getting locked in to one provider? iTunes? You mean the music store that Apple uses to lock people into using iPods? ;-)

subscription automatically imples DRM of some sort, because once you have the music, whats to stop you stopping the payment and keeping the music?

iTunes-like... as in an online shop where u go and buy your music to download.
