Hi guys,

I have a urgent request.

I need a genius techie to come over and rescue my 500w PSU from certain death.

Long story short - my 2 fans in my PSU have stopped spinning - I've been told that it is fixable.

Also, it's just outta warranty.

Techie in Cape Town who feels like helping out, please let me know urgently!

PS: I'm not shy to admit that replacing it is not possible, I do not have money for it.

Why don't you try replacing the fans yourself? Unless they can't be romoved from the PSU.

Get 2x 8cm fans, if you don't have already, and even an electrician should be able to help you, cause normally the power cables for the fans are soldered onto a pc board inside the psu and the fans are attached with screws. Sorry, but I am a bit far to help you more. :D

Thx SB... am sorta hoping someone in CPT can come and have a look, if need be, I'll gladly buy the 2x fans but yeah... just want someone good to actually look and tell me.

Okay, I've opened it up.

The PSU anyways.

There is alike a control board (if you wanna call it that)

The one fan is connected to the board via a 2 pin connection and the other fan (the back one) is connected straight onto the board and is soldered.

The worrying thing here is that the 2 pin connection, there looks like a little burn on it (little brown on the white 2 pin connection)

Logically, I'm thinking that I can't fix this, because if it has 'shorted' or 'burnt out' then the board (where the 2 fans connect) is buggered and thus, no way of fixing this.

Suggestions?

what brand of psu is it? just so that we may avoid it . . .

I see you have a 8800GTX/S display card. :p

Here's what I would do, take out the 2 fans. The one with the white plug on it, cut that one, but leave a decent amount of cable on the plug side as well. Test the fans with a battery or something to check if they are still working.

If they are still working, get another PSU. If not, get 2 fans that are working and connect them up to the white plug thingy. Isolate the connections and plug them on to the PSU. Turn on just to check if they are turning.

If they are not turning and you are sure that the power supply is on, but another PSU. If they are turning, put them into place. Close the PSU and you should be on your way. :D

You could also just buy two new fans and connect them up with a molex connecter on the outside of the PSU. Most shops that sell fans will also have the molex to fan plug converters Some drilling might be required.

Thx SharkBait & Rkootknir, but that's just too much for me... I can barely use a toliet roll and you want me to do the above... are you guys fawking nuts? ;)

Thanks to Surv0, I'm going to get a GIGABYTE® ODIN 470W PSU from Rectron.

It will set me back for the month, but look, it's done and I've been avoiding it for long enough.

PostmanPot;

This is my PC, it's 2nd only to my GF in "love" amount... ARE YOU NUTS???!!?!

Rather buy a new PSU and be broke :(

Dont u know anyone with broken/old psu's? Just rip out their fans and replace it in urs. And u dont need to use a soldering iron.

The fan on my psu broke...a long time ago...I just cut the wires connecting the fan to the psu from the middle but slightly different for the two wires, stick in the new fan, connect the wires and used some insulating tape...it worked perfectly...still in my stepmom's pc.

But then again u have a GTX that might make the psu hot...risky maybe?
