hi guys, i am going to be purchasing a new gfx card in a week or 2 to, a gtx 570, im currently running

i7 2600
4gb ddr3 1333
1 tb seagate sata hdd
some liteon dvd drive

and a gigabyte odin 585 w psu, im wanting to know if this psu is suitable or if i need to choose a less powerful card?

That PSU is not suitable for any PC. :D

No really, they are crap.

What's your budget?

Eh?

The Odin range is a renouned range. They are very good PSUs. Maybe his PSU may be a bit underpowered, but what you are saying is subjective and probably BS.

I dissagree again, as ive bought and sold a few of those PSU's myself and never had any problems with them. They are budget PSU's yes.

For the graphics card you want, the psu is too light..If you have the money I would stick to the graphics card and buy a better and bigger powersupply. a 650W or more.

If you don't have the money, the 585 should be alright for a gt550 or equivalent ATI card.. Maybe look at the 6770 or bigger? Just throwing some ideas out there.

Incorrect.

Odin GT is the [current] renowned range.

Odin's, particularly the popular-for-the-wrong-reasons 585watt, is well known to be dirt. In fact, worse than Cooler Master Extreme Power.

Basically Gigabyte decided to use the Odin name for all their PSU's. I think you're thinking about the past, when there was only one Odin range - effectively now the Odin GT.

I had a Odin GT 800w pop on me, when i enquired as to warranty was told one year. Get a Corsair GS600 if u on a budget.
Oh and the 585w is crappy with short cables.(hate that)

Using logic that, because you have bought and sold a few of something with no returns, they "can't be crap"... Is completely wrong. It is a straw-man argument, one of the worst things you can ever do in debate.

I've bought and sold more than a few R150 case+PSU bundles -- effectively half the price than a Gigabyte 585watt alone and have never had any problems with them.

Depends who you are asking. Quality is interpretable in different ways. Odin is half-a-step up from said R150 case+PSU combo's, sure. But in the greater scheme of things, they are crap.

Can we find some common ground now, or do you still disagree?

A quality branded 500watt PSU i.e. from the likes of Corsair/Antec will be more than enough to handle even the fastest single GPU on the market.

I am not debating whether the Gigabyte Odin 585watt will be "alright" for x, y and z graphics cards.

In fact I believe it will handle a GTX570 "alright".

Would I recommend it, or sell that idea to anyone? Not a chance.

Go it about it this way.

Google your current PSU and find it's specifications (you already know the watts you need to know the amps also)
Some detailed specs may also be printed on the PSU itself.

Then go to Nvidia..find your card and look for the "requirements" tab.

I made a list detailing the approx. wattage, amps.
It also list the power connector your card needs.
Hope it helps.

All gfx card vendor recommendations are grossly exaggerated to cover their asses from the exact likes of Gigabyte Odin 585watt PSUs...

Your spreadsheets & effort therein is commendable, but are only really good for those who insist on using crap PSUs.

+1

GS600 is pretty good if budget is limited.

I tend to recommend TX650 minimum. ±R150 more than the GS600, better quality and more watts, as well as efficiency. But more importantly, 2 years extra warranty.

On Topic: That PSU will not run that card unfortunately, you're going to have to buy a new one bud. Your graphics card pretty much determines the power supply you need as it draws the most power AFAIK.

Off Topic: I haven't had any problems with my gigabyte Odin 585watt, however that system is only running a GTS250 and 3xSATA drives so its not a real strain on the PSU.

Sal12344: ALL products have a 1 year warranty...WITH THE STORE YOU PURCHASED IT FROM ONLY. Unfortunately the majority of PC users doesn't know this and a computer store will not willingly tell their clients this. This is what happened to me: Bought an Asus card, failed in 20 months, phoned store and they said it was out of warranty (and tried to sell me a new one), phoned Asus they said it was in warranty (2 year warranty) and I must phone the supplier and apply for RMA, phoned store and they reluctantly told me the supplier (axiz, very nice people), phoned supplier and sent in the card and got an upgraded one in return.

As was already said. It's crap. It's rated for 460watts continuous. That 585watt is the peak rating which it can only do for a few seconds.

The Odin GTs are the good Odins.

The Odin 585W is actually a 450W powersupply.

The 585w rating is peak power output, not sustained...its a piece of crap.

Id search for the source, but it was a few months ago when I was buying my new PC.

Use at your own risk basically.

585w Odin is notoriously bad, PP is absolutely correct. I would say that you are actually putting your system at risk just running a normal setup with a graphics card, never mind a high-end 570 rig.

Gotten a bit "quiet" in here. :D

I honestly think one of the things that makes me love this forum so much is when the PSU debate comes up in a topic.

I know myself and PostmanPot tend to like to throw Corsair in all these debates. Myself it is because of experience. I started off on Gigabyte some time ago as that was "the brand" for computers and then after it failed I rushed to get what was available, so I got myself a CoolerMaster Extreme Power Plus, 2 weeks later that failed, got a replacement, a month later that failed and then I just switched over to Corsair (Actually because I read a post by PostmanPot regarding their PSU's) and I've been a happy chappy since then xD

But yes, I would definitely recommend something other than your current power supply. It won't support your current system or it might, but underpower your GFX card.

Personally I'm using a Corsair GS600 in my gaming PC, but like PostmanPot said, if you have the extra R150, rather get the TX650. They are about R1 000 though...

yoah thanks guys ! if it wasnt going to work out i was just going to go for a 560 gtx ti but from reading the above eitherway im going to need a new power supply it would seem, would a Coolermaster RP/RS-600-PCAR eXtreme power plus 600w be ok? the corsairs are out of my price range
