Can anyone suggest me a decent 550-600w power supply, preferably for under R600? I came home yesterday to a dead PSU. POS Huntkey didn't even last a year.

I went by the mall today but all of the shops only supply POS Huntkeys at ridiculous prices. The one shop wanted to sell me a 550w Huntkey for R670 and I just laughed in their faces while they tried to insist Huntkey was a decent brand. I can probably get a proper Corsair or something for that price.

There are decent Huntkey power supplies, like their X7 range, but otherwise I'll also avoid it.

If you can go up to R700, then have a look at the XFX ProSeries 550W PSU, which has a 5yr warranty aside from it being good value all-round.

Btw, what is your PC specs like, because you'll only need a 500W PSU if you have a high end system.

My PC is mid to low spec. The GPU draws the most power. I'm running an Intel e6500 dual core CPU with 4GB RAM and a HD6870. I'm a bit worried to go under 500w with the GPU.

I basically just need a temporary PSU, because I'm building a new PC in December, so I don't want to waste too much when I'm not going to use it for long. The Corsair Rickster linked doesn't look too bad, but I'm a bit wary because it sounds like it's a low-end Corsair PSU.

Why not then just get a decent PSU now and use it in your new PC that you're going to build in December?

That XFX 550W should suffice for an overlocked i7 and GTX780. For your current rig, a decent 400W PSU would even do the trick.

I have a Gigabyte PSU. It keeps my pc running during brownouts when 4 others in the house always reboot.

Return your Huntkey then if it's still under warranty. My 700W Huntkey is running hundreds. Only cost me R750.

Do you know how dangerous low voltage is for PC equipment?
Why would you say that?

In my mind I would guess that the PC would simply malfunction due to insufficient power. I can understand that over voltage could damage your PC equipment...

The problem is that buying that kicks the total price up to almost R800 because I have to factor in shipping costs as well. That places me seriously over budget, seeing as I am still a student at the end of the day. But eh, maybe I'll just go without a PC this month and get one of these next month then. This coming month is going to be too hectic to get much time in for gaming anyway.

I have long since lost the proof of purchase and I can't even remember where I purchased it, so that probably won't help me much. Either way, the less I have to do with Huntkey, the happier I'll be. While their higher end products might not be bad, their lower end products are rubbish designed by satan himself. I just don't understand why it seems to have a monopoly with the physical retailers in SA. Every shop you go to will try to sell you Huntkey PSUs and all of them do so at ludicrous prices. My only guess is that all these shops buy these things for dirt cheap, which enables them to sell them at insane markups.

I know that physical retailers are often more expensive than other retailers, but holy ****. R670 for a 550w Huntkey? You can buy a decent PSU for that price. It's like selling a VW Beetle for the same price as a Ferrari.

Rickster is right. Undervoltage is the same dangerous as overvoltage. Design is different, some will do autoswitching to voltage doubler. This will expose to the overvoltage stress when power comes back to the normal level. Some power supplies with active PFC have no switching, but contiguous input preregulator, can work on the wide 90-250V input range. Still there is assumption that input voltage is stable, brownouts are dangerous even for these complicated devices.

Try switch your PSU to 110V then turn your PC on....

Yeah, I'm thinking of ordering one from Wootware and just picking it up tomorrow. They're apparently 20km from where I live.
