PSVR2 launch sales disappoint

Sony Group Corp. is projected to sell fewer than 300,000 PlayStation VR2 headsets in its first weeks on the market, a slow start for company efforts to take a leading role in development of the metaverse.

The Tokyo-based console maker is likely to sell about 270,000 units of the PSVR2 between its Feb. 22 release and the end of March, according to estimates from the research firm IDC.

Sony can't be too surprised given that PSVR2 costs as much as a PS5 and that there isn't a huge game selection for it atm.

PSVR2 is an absolute revelation though. I hope more people get to experience it.

270k units in the first month of release does not sound too bad to me, given the price. PSVR1 sold 915k in the first 4 months for reference.

Not surprising as the barrier to entry is so high, very few people have a PS5 to begin with , now add the cost of PSVR2 ontop of that, and other competitors like the Quest2 ....

I'm disappointed that Sony is disappointed when they knew the price of VR2 is too expensive... they should have known.

It's already much cheaper than other high-quality VR headsets, whilst arguably being the best out of all of them. I'd be surprised if Sony can reduce the price further.

Bloomberg in shambles.

Official numbers from Sony, PSVR2 is outselling PSVR in weeks 1-6 despite a) not being available by retail immediately b) launching to a smaller total install base (PS4 vs PS5) and c) Launching in Spring vs. Holiday season.

So really, it's doing pretty well I'd say

Global consumers are in trouble and can no longer afford these luxuries. It is going to get a whole lot worst too.

This is normally the time in the consoles life cycle that a cheaper revision is released

Sony should've taken a page from Budwiser and sent free PSVR2s to Trans-influencers instead.

To be fair to Bloomberg, the 270,000 unit estimate came from Sony itself. The company underestimated demand.

No it didn't? The Bloomberg article was written by Takashi Mochizuki who's known for pushing BS like this and the figure came from some analyst firm doing 'market research'. This is the first report from Sony regarding sales numbers afaik.

He also came up with this:

To which Sony actually responded and said that it's BS.
