Public protector slated over R19m irregular expenditure

Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu has made damning findings against the Office of the Public Protector, saying it has failed to comply with legislation when buying goods and services.
This emerged in a shocking annual report tabled in Parliament recently, which stated that the Office of the Public Protector had raked in R19million in irregular expenditure dating back to 2006.


The payments were made during the period of incumbents Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Thuli Madonsela and Lawrence Mushwana.


However, Makwetu took issue with Mkhwebane, saying she failed to review and monitor compliance with legislation and irregular expenditure that continued after she took office in October 2016.


“An action plan was developed to address external audit findings, however adherence to the plan was not adequately monitored to prevent non-compliance with legislation,” he said.

Makwetu said non-compliance could have been prevented had compliance been properly reviewed and monitored by management.

PUBLIC PROTECTOR TO PUT MEASURES IN PLACE TO CURB IRREGULAR EXPENDITURE

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane says that she's putting measures in place to curb irregular expenditure at her office.
This is in response to the damning findings made by Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu against the office, which has incurred R19 million in irregular expenditure dating back to 2003.
In a report to Parliament, it's been revealed that the Public Protector's office has not followed due process when procuring goods and services. This was the case not only under Mkhwebane’s tenure but her predecessors, Thuli Madonsela and Lawrence Mushwana.
Mkhwebane's spokesperson Oupa Segalwe says: “The irregular expenditure here was not only for the 2017/2018 financial year. In fact, in that particular year, we incurred far less. It was less than R1 million of irregular expenditure. We’re still not proud of that.”

You're the Public Protector's office, held to the very highest moral standards by default. A single fekking ZAR of fraud (irregular expenditure my ass!) is more than enough to be ashamed of.

Don't "curb" it, STOP it and prosecute the guilty!
