I'm all for a levy, but a R1/liter increase would be a bit much no? And not in conjunction with the e-Tolls or you might as well not have bothered with them in the first place. Doesn't make sense to me. If you can change that, please feel free to do so (Not being sarcastic - I'd like to understand the reasoning).
To me it just seems that due to misappropriations of funds, be it corruption, bad planning etc, they cannot afford to improve things. But they have to improve things to be seen as a government that thinks of the people... This gets them votes.
But in the process why not make a bit of money for the ruling party.

I'm merely pointing out that their intention from the outset was to introduce a combined recovery mechanism. The details of which I don't have access to so I can't guess what the split would be, but fuel levy increases aren't exactly optimal in this day and age...

Treasury made it quite clear last night that a fuel levy was impractical and not an option
with regards what has happened to the levy's already paid it has gone into the general fiscus and allocated to other government priorities such as housing, health, education, Nkandla etc

here's an idea seeing as government has just revealed that 15% of the fuel price is a legacy of apartheid, take that 15% as is and channel it back into the roads
Believe me I assisted a friend (worked for IEC) but he couldn't drive for the voting periods (last two) and the reality is that about 70 - 80 % Indians & Coloreds from 18 year upwards do not care to vote! average figures for Whites is 55%. Educate/motivate these numbers & you CAN get a new government in next election!
When protests are ignored there is destruction of property, now you know how the strikers justify violent protests.
I still don't know how they justify damaging things that are not part of their grievance,
such as breaking privately owned shop windows while protesting government service delivery.
