Public transport operators exempt from E-toll

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise- let the taxis and Putco buses take each other out on the highway, and leave the remainder of the roads to us...

:p

Surpised? Nope..

Hopefully there will be less taxis on the alternative routes

“Those who qualify for this exemption are public transport operators in possession of valid permits and operating licences and whose vehicles are registered on the eNatis system,” spokeswoman Octavia Mamabolo said in a statement.

oh, so that's about 20%, so the other 80% still need to pay tolls

I've mentioned before that its not that hard to register your vehicle for public transport...

This is gr8 news for people like myself who uses public transport to get around. I think it is only fair that the public transport operators are exempt from paying e-tolls. :p

The problem with most people who are having their own vehicle is the fact that they are too worried about ever trying public transport due to the fact that you are not having your own time to go somewhere and must adhere to a timetable of when the transport will arrive and depart. For me this is a very small sacrifice to make as I save on so many aspects like petrol, maintenance, insurance, parking, etc. I had a second-hand Golf a few years back and it really cost me too much i.t.o these mentioned aspects that I was happy to sell it for next to nothing.

Majority of people are too scared to take the initial plunge and try out the public transport closest to them. Scared of being seen by their neighbors..., Scared of crime..., Scared of trusting others..., Etc, etc... :p

Anyway, welcome to the real world to the those still having these sad excuses not to take public transport, you know who you are and are probably busy thinking up a new excuse to use. LOL! :p

really? troll much?

the only reason why public transport is exempt cause they would strike and protest and cause havoc across the province.

and most of the voters use taxis and PUTCO busses

A person is being honest and they are labelled a troll...someone was clearly upset over my post. If the shoe fits then I will wear it although I was just merely stating some pretty obvious facts. I work with people that have told me those very reasons why they are not taking public transport. :p

You're statement was trolling because of one simple fact,a cap of R450 would not impact the price of a taxi ride or bus ride at all.Taxi's and busses go through thousands of rand of fuel a month and that would be like a 3% rise in the cost of travelling in a taxi.....which is insignificant compared to the percentage the average motorist has to pay over his/her fuel spend which is around 20%.

I don't have a problem with the costs though, its the principle of the whole thing and the underlying corruption of the system that really ticks me off.I mean who in their right mind spends 25 billion rand TO COLLECT 18 billion rand.

Well sorry to hear about the struggle of motorists to make ends meet. Please accept my sincere apology. I tend to forget sometimes that the forum is a place to only say things that is politically correct. Now go annoy someone else.

Hmm, the problem I see with this is the whole reason for the tolling, i.e. charging those who use the roads in a direct proportion to their use. So the heaviest consumers, public transport (well private companies offering public transport), pay the least. You then look at the statements around fuel levies being unfair etc and the argument starts to break down a bit.

If there were a legitimate reason other than gov being scared of taxi and bus mass action I could get behind this, but to me it seems more like a way to fudge the numbers of those supporting etolls and minimise the mass action risk. As noted in posts above the R450 ceiling would have very little impact on fare prices.
