Anyone making use of public transport?

I live in Gordons Bay and take the Business Express every morning into Town. I am quite pleased with the service as it is punctual 99% of the time. When it is late, it is seldom more than 10 minutes. Also travelling time is a lot shorter, about 65 minutes from Strand to Cape Town.

Not really. The bus here is not nearly reliable enough.

Somewhat OT:
I was on a Gautrain emergency drill on Saturday...tunnel evacuation exercise (PTA link). Went pretty well, just hope there is never a fire down there: The only aspect of the exercise that isn't handled by a private company is the fire truck...guess who took forever to rock up.

Also, that tunnel is deeper than I thought & the concrete staircase was built with a skew ruler. On the whole though its pretty well thought out & looks good so I think people will really use it a lot, esp with the damn tollgates going up everywhere like mushrooms.

Nothing would make me happier than if there was decent public transport between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

Since you take the business express every day, do you finish work at 4.30? Cause from what I have seen, the train leaves Cape Town Central Station at 5pm, and I can not figure out how most people who work 8-5 can then make that train! Seems like the most silly decision ever made.

Yep I work from 8 to 4:30. I actually get to town at 7:30, and walk into the office at 7:45

Boerseun, check with your company if you can VPN in to work. Some companies actually count the time spent on the train as working hours if you VPN in and start your morning emails, etc.

I see Gautrain buses have started running routes in Centurion now too.
Spotted my first bus yesterday morning going from the Station area, past Supersport Park towards Makro.
Quite a number of people on it, even though the Gautrain isn't open yet.

I would love to use the Gautrain. But there are no stations close to my house. And I'm definitely not going to go anywhere in a taxi... Rather drive myself around

There is parking at the stations & buses not taxis at the destination.

Even though the Gautrain Station is very near my house, and there are buses running from the station in Sandton to my work (right past it, anyway) I will not be using the Gautrain.

It will cost me a lot more, AND take me much longer, to take the Gautrain + bus combo to work and back than it does at present.

I'm on a bike and I take back roads. Gautrain would have to be a quarter of the price to make it remotely viable for me, but it will still double my travelling time.

Its not the worst thing in the world to ask your boss to leave at 4:40 or so because you're taking the train. You'll also get in just before 8am and can work on the train with laptop points. Only a very rigid company would disallow this.

I've been using Cape Metrorail on the southern line for about 5 years now, and random Golden Arrow busses (the new ones are very nice, air conditioning ftw) and taxis. It's not quite Business Express but metrorail hs in general been far better than people's perceptions of it, and also usually on time. Still too many delays and cancellations, but very usable.
