This seems pretty much just like some good cops doing their jobs properly. Tells you a lot about the majority of them if this comes as a surprise. I remember when I was still a little kid during the early 90's how they used to do this a lot to our family, and it seemed normal.

I dont remember how many times I've been stopped. Lots. Was stopped in Soweto once and they had a checklist of some sort where they can ticked off things like lights, tyres etc. Only saw that once and never saw it again on any other roadblock/stop

I've been pulled over many times.

Some cops simply pull me over because they want to see the car I'm driving and have a chat, some just make sure everything is in order.

I hope this is still relatively on topic, but what you guys think about the latest development with regards to them now being able to do random full on driving skill tests? And then have the power to revoke your licence should you fail. The first thing i thought of was is this going to be the same type of test that you had to do when you first got your licence? Pre departure checklists, hands at 10 and 2, blindspot checks at every stop. The whole 9 yards. No one drives like that since the beginning of time. I know for a fact the cop that will be testing you doesn't even. Here's hoping they go on what they can remember also, and aren't prepped in the ways of first time driving skill for our aggravated pleasure.

I'm just glad I no longer drive, the last time I drove a car was at the beginning of December when my car was written off.

Its an expensive mode of transport and I simply rely on uber or public transport to go where I want to these days.

They don't have the power to retest you or revoke your license.

Only been stopped in road blocks for vehicle and licence checks, fined for R500 for expired licence just 3 weeks ago at Heidelberg. Back in the day when I was smoking, rolling my own the cops, police roadblock, really searched my car after finding my bag of with Drum and papers. No issues with that either. Suppose I fitted the "profile", young, unshaven, listening to loud rock and driving a crock.:D

lol same thing happened to me a few times in my younger days. One time they had us pack out the whole car (4 people on holiday) and searched through the car and our bags - even had the dog sniff everything.

Nothing to be found though as we smoked everything we had when we came over the hill and saw the roadblock. We actually couldn't fit our bags back in the boot as we were to high. Cops had to help :)

But no - never been asked for a bribe.

This has been thoroughly debunked by Justice Project South Africa. They do not have the power to do this at all and if they try to they are breaking the law.

Been stopped many many times in DBN and surroundings. Just Drivers check and walk around the car.

Also twice in roadblocks. Once on the M4 south before Bluff, they check the boot etc. I think they were looking for weapons. And once in Waterfall around 11pm, but was let go without any search or drivers check. Was probably looking for drunk drivers.

Been living in Oman now for 8 months, touch wood, not stopped once.

It's usually the metro cops who ask for bribes, not the proper SAPS cops.

My experience has been the opposite... Been a few times for bribes from SAPS (paid once - the first time) and Metro has always just handed me the ticket.

Get pulled off at least once a week (Sun 8pm last) here in Midrand....I swear this place has more cops (Metro) per sq km than any other town...Also coz I drive a tattered old bakkie, cracked windscreen...pointed out to me many times, with hands diving for the fine book as to give me a fine - but playing for a bribe. That's when I tell them firmly, bad road surface caused crack and I'm not paying for the windscreen (gonna cost R1350.00 - Ford 1 x ton truck I have) nor a bribe...
Other than that, no fines for the past 20 years...

We got checked three times between Capetown and PE ahead of Easter weekend. Each time they did a visual inspection of the car, license disk, and my drivers license (which is a foreign one). No hint of impropriety whatsoever.
You're lucky. Foreign license holders are supposed to convert them to local.

On the bike I get pulled over every few months. Normally just to see if I actually have a license and sometimes I think just so they can have a closer look and a quick chat.

Car only normally when in the harbour and usually by customs not the cops.

Never had any issues. Or even a fine. Few warnings though.

I can agree with Mitos about the Metro cops in Midrand.

I live about 10km's away from my work (live and work in Midrand) and pass through on average about 2 roadblocks in the morning (just small ones with about 2 Metro vehicles with about 4 officers) and roughly the same on my way back home.

About 3 times on Robert Sobukwe (then still Modderdam Rd) North in Bellville. Traffic officers were pulling over random cars and taxis, and not one of the times did they make any mention of my car being lowered. Just checked my driver's and vehicle licenses and let me go with a smile.
