So the cricket board is punishing them by sending them to Pakistan :D
I wonder how many are going to quit before being picked

Well, it's not rocketscience that there is a problem with the spin and flat pitch department, but let's hope that we seriously consider putting more effort into the development side of the game - not just existing players, but promising up and comming proteas - maybe they should send some promising youngsters there instead... think long term.

"No stone was left unturned over the past two years in preparing them for this World Cup. In addition, they were given a professional support staff of 12 for the World Cup.

Clearly there were a few boulders (thats big rocks Gerald) left unturned over the last 2 years.

"Which ones" I hear you ask.

A fckng spinner you chop. A decent coach & a captain.

"Want more" you say.

How about someone assist Macky to develop a slower ball!

Oh yeah! Maybe the fitness or doctor (or whatever you call him) guy should have his pay witheld. And don't give me hot weather bs. England players never got cramp and the like.

maybe we need to make our pitches more spinner friendly and make them flater

the pitches in this country are awesome for batting

with all pitches where like that

eah - great for batting, but really carp for learning to spin a ball... wish we had a spinner... why are there no youngsters up and coming who want to guarantee a part in the squad for 10 years - just concentrate on spin - oh, i forgot, they have nowhere to test and hone their skills.

Look at it the other way, if they can be good on SA type wickets they will be devastating on spin friendly types.. If they find a spin batsmen he'll be guarenteed a spot in the team for a long time.

I'm not sure I agree with you krycor - our match against Banladesh was proof - yes, there was a bit of turn, but the real issue they had was playing balls that didn't leap of the pitch to them - they just can't play the flat pitch, no matter what they tried, the boundaries appeared miles away.
In those instances, you learn to tuck away singles - lots of them - ala Jonty. They don't seem to realize that taking singles when not hitting boundaries keeps the score ticking tidily. You can do 6 singles an over and the odd boundary to make up for the overs you only make 4.

Unlike bowling, spin batting can be taught and learned as part of daily practice - all true batsmen should be able to play both spin/flat/pace/bounce - some may be better at one or the other, but you can't afford a specialist specialist.

I think he means a spinner who's also a batsman? Could be wrong though

exactly, pollock is on his way out, we don't have a replacement all rounder of pollocks standard :( Kallis is also on his way out tho since he is more of a batsmen maybe just maybe he will still be around another 4 yrs, heck gibbs + boucher can go on for how long too?? hall will be gone too. Aussie is gonna see some changes soon in particular mc grath going, pointing, hayden, gilchrist might not be far off.. One advantage SA has is prince, smith, nel, de villiers, langeveldt maybe? are gonna be around for a bit still. but there is a huge gaps waiting to be filled.

That's the thing - even though oz have players on their way out, they just seem to find replacements at will. It's much harder for us to fill the gaps

Why is that though? There SHOULD be a crapload of talent coming through the domestic league for us to choose from surely?

Not sure hey, I look at players like Bosman, Morkel and JP who could easily fit in if they were given a fair enough trial run, but it seems as though the selectors are either too doff to let them play or have no confidence in their ability to play. Encouraging isn't it :(

I know :( but cricket is one sport of ours I have faith in, if the selectors can drop their rigid way of thinking and actually give these guys a chance, they'll actually SHOW what they do on the field but like you say, no use having the talent and not being given a run...

cricket players are getting too much money... they are driven by the money not the sport...

You make some good points there krycor... the future is bleak unless they get themesleves into gear and find those elusive talented youngstas... and im not talking about the st scythians relatives of ex cricketers either - although the talented ones are more than welcome.

Proteas to be renamed Amateas. The "Pro" in the name is misleading and can cause unrealistic expectations. In "New SA" lingo they will then be known as the Amateateas.

Loots Bosman has a terrible domestic limited over record. He barely averages 30 :| You cant have a player like this on the international scene. He was chosen so that the quotas for the team were met. Telemachus is way past his prime, and Petersen is NOT a quality spinner.

Why was a player like this http://content-rsa.cricinfo.com/southafrica/content/player/222159.html not chosen? Because he isnt a player of colour... that is why

until government keeps politics out of sport we wont win any major tournaments..

Firstly, if you search through the Sports forum you will see I have been totally outspoken against the players getting a free trip to the WI because of the quota. I am dead set against Pieterson being chosen as a "spinner" when I proved in another thread that even Graeme Smith has a better strike rate and avearge.

Secondly, and this is the point of my reply, why would you punt a player like this AND play the race card? This guy is only starting out his career and he hasn't even set the domestic league on fire. You are so contradicting yourself with the mention that Bosman hasn't performed at domestic level, so has Jean Symes then??? Have you compared him to other spinners in this country? Lets take your race card further, seeing that you want to stir... how does Paul Harris or Johan Botha compare to Symes? Show me stats dude.

Please don't just post these one liners if you don't have ANYTHING to back it up. It's not fair on players like Symes when he is realy just starting out and who knows, perhaps he WILL represent SA in later years.

Btw, I have a friend who lives in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape and her 12 year old son (white :D ) has been selected for his u/13 provincial team and I'm telling you this guy is an OPENING batsman (ave > 100) AND an opening bowler who has taken 5 wickets or more in his young career. Watch out for Edward Mike Moore!!
So I am all positive about the youth coming through the ranks, but I don't stir on forums like these.
