Hi All,

I'm new to using this forum even though lord knows I've dug through pages and pages of useful information. I am desperately seeking advice on 3 points:

1.) I am possibly going to buy my mates a3 2009 18.TFSI facelift with 100000km on the clock for R 105k with FSH and no accidents.
2.) Trading my vehicle into imperial to either get a lexus IS 250 a/t 2008-2013 model, really like it as my dad drove one a while back.
3.) What should I be ideally looking at in a budgetary range of about R 230k, my reason for wanting to buy is I am currently in a Suzuki Swift 1.4 GLS (Great Car) but would like something with a bit more power and more family friendly as I am currently engaged and settling down.

Really any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The suzuki has 4 seats. Your girlfriend liked you when you driving it. If she does not have a car i would look at that.

I appreciate the sentiment however, she has a Kia Picanto and this would be for me. I have been driving the swift for 4 years as well and starting to get bored.

Engaged, family friendly and settling down.. so a little one could be on the way soon. Why buy an a3/lexus then? Your money is better spent on a cheaper maintenance family car leaving the funds to use for your kids/family.

You aren't going to get many helpful replies here. A lot of "you have a car already drive it till it dies".

The Audi will be relatively cheap to maintain. I say this as it's mostly vw so lots of parts available. Not sure on Lexus prices. They are 2 different cars. Hard to compare to each other.

To clarify, settling down is that I am 3 years out of varsity now and have a nicer job and stable home. Not planning on having children for another 5 years at the minimum (not planned anyway). So would like to enjoy something a little exciting before kids do eventually come.

My father shares a similar perspective however, I remember him continually buying BMW's. I enjoy the Audi the only reason I mentioned Lexus is my dad and all his brother drove them and never had any issues with them and maintenance was apparently also not catastrophically expensive.

New turbo charged Suzuki Swift sport
Second hand polo gti (make sure you get one with a warranty that’s not tuned/modded )
Ford Fiesta ST

An honest stock polo gti is hard to come by. Pnp chips are popular in them so it's difficult to know if the one you buy was modded at any stage. Most of the common performance mods are plug and play and removed before sale

Rule out the GTi, big mistake!
The fezz st would be a little upgrade from Swift sport, personally love my st, the swift sport is a great looking car too.

To the op: the audi would probably be easier to maintain as mentioned. I also wouldn't get a high mileage car even if it has FSH, lexus could be expensive to maintain. Look at the volvo range?

Why don't you get a beautiful Volvo V40, that Audi 1.8 has high oil consumption issues.

Lexus is awesome, the engine is quite thirsty. Its basically just a fancy Toyota, last forever!

The audi 1.8t motor are well know to use more oil then petrol, stay away :P

Get the Lexus and enjoy yourself. Don’t even bother with the Audi. It will break down every week and also cost you a friend. Rather get the Lexus.

However if it were my money I would get a 14’ or 15’ BMW 320D.

Just an update I went with the Audi A3 and I am not regretting it one bit.
