Purchasing decision - Mac vs PC (no trolling please)

And you can just as easily build a hackintosh to do just what you said.

imo a PC is a far better option when you consider the price to performance ratio.
I don't like OSX either.
Or Mac elitism considering it's all bloody Intel anyway.

My next desktop PC will be a Mac Hackintosh for sure.

Intel or not, the point is no fragmentation, efficiency and better use of resources, with an OS designed for but a few sets of hardware. ;)

Well here is a twist.

I have always been a PC guy. Loved it. Used it all the way from Windows 3.0 to Windows 7.
Also use Linux on a daily basis.
So I know how things have changed for the better.

Recently got my first macbookpro retina, and using OSX for the first time ever.
It really is amazing, it just works.

I can't stress how impressed I am with Mac OSX. Again it just works.

As for limited software? There wasn't anything I couldn't find for the mac, so not sure where the comments come from that the software choice on mac is limited...?

Exactly my experience. Windows PC for 19 years, Mac PC for 1 year and counting and I'll never go back.

Silly question but what are the specs of your daughter's Macbook? Is it possible that a simple internal component refresh would provide enough of a boost that she would be ok for the things she needs to do? It's incredible what some more ram and an ssd can do.

Current Specs:

Macbook 13 inch (she find the screen a bit small for everyday use though)
Core 2 Duo (2.13 GHz)
2 GB ram (2 x 1 Gig modules)
500 Gig Hard Drive

So if I was going to upgrade the existing machine, I would probably have to look at

Replace RAM with 2 x 2 Gig modules - PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz or PC2-6400 DDR2 800 MHz ) - cost ?
Replace Hard Drive with 256 Gig SSD - cost ?
Replace battery (current one is shot) - cost ?

Not sure what all that will cost me.

Was the same for me. I always said I'm never going to spend so much on a Mac, but when you start using it everything becomes clear.

Things that don't matter to me:

High performance gaming
Upgradability
Windows ecosystem

Things that do matter to me:

Usability
Simplicity
Battery life

I still use Linux for all my servers but and really despise it when I have to do support on Windows boxes :D

I have zero support for my PC. How do you mean more support?

The amount and variety of technical support you can phone to get help with an issue you may have in a timley and economical manner. IE, there are more technicians that know windows than apple. Supply and demand.

Except usability and experience but given your comments it is natural that those don't matter to you.

Yeah, I tend to focus on getting the job done rather than focusing on pretty stuff.

Versus just going to the Apple store for help? No man support on Apple side is way better.

That's sadly always the case.

You tell people it's awesome and you get branded a "fanboy" until you actually give them a machine and say go use it for a week.

I can recall only one person coming back to me and stating they'd rather have their Windows machine back and that was also one of the PC gamer types which is understandable.

Depending on the existing model I'd probably go with this option myself. Some models might not be able to take full advantage of the SSD but it will still be faster. I'd also probably remove the superdrive and replace it with the existing HDD and run a fusion drive.

This sounds interesting - so put in a small SSD for boot and OS - I wasn't aware that you could remove the Superdrive and put a HD in it's place.

I've done it with a couple of my MB's now and it's well worth it. On my current machine I've set the two drives up as a single fusion drive and it's great. Best of both worlds - the speed of a SSD with the storage of a HDD - and you end up with a single logical drive to back up. :)

You can get a more functional and more powerful system for what you would pay for a Mac. PC`s are also easier to upgrade and repair. You will also have more support for a PC. It kinda wins in every department that really counts.

Support not an issue - do all support myself.

The only superior support I can think of is the Dell 3 Year onsite support <--- and the Dells that come with this are in the same price range as the Mac

Officially 4gb - unofficially it's probably 8 ;)

The problem is finding reasonably priced 4GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMMs.

This.

And then they come to Mac threads to chime in...

For me, the main benefit of a PC is the amount of software available for it. Almost all software will run on a PC while you are somewhat limited on a Mac.
I also think the comments about constant updates and restarting are a fallacy. This was the case about a decade ago, however Microsoft only pushes out updates once a month now (patch Tuesday) and this is the only time you usually need to reboot.
Windows 7 & 8.1 require very little maintenance as well. The problem usually comes if you are installing and uninstalling lots of software and with the bloatware that many vendors shove onto the laptops.

That said, by the sounds of it, you really like Macs and are more comfortable with them so if you are OK with spending the extra money, then go for it. It really comes down to personal preference, but don't be mislead by XP era issues that have been fixed in modern Windows.

Thanks

Tried that route with a old Dell (for which there is a full hackintosh guide) - too fiddly to get everything working 100% - if it's for me, yes, but not for my daughter

:o - anyone with kids / spouse knows that their stuff must just work otherwise it's endless pain for dad...endless :o
