I'm attempting setting up a push-to-talk server on linux, as far as I know its a jabber server, just not sure anyone with tips, help or info on how to go about this?

As in from mobile phone to mobile phone?

Or some other push to talk technology?

You have any links to such software? Then I can at least help you install and configure it.

As nic said we need a lot more details, give us as much possible.

okay sure, apparently one can set up a jabber server and configure it to support the "wireless Village protocol", thats not to hard. But thats not the major mission. I know there is supposed to be something similar for push-to-talk..busy researching it. And yes, we are busy implementing this on our network as to where the users will have access to the jabber IM feature's via pidgin on their PC's,and IM on their phone, we would also like to implement and use nokia's "presence" feature which is also one of the services. I know the push-to-talk feature must also be usable in a like way manner utilizing gprs/3g/hsdpa..as u can see this is quite the bold operation but I'm hoping that doing so could save money in the long run..so just wondering if one of u could just point me in the right direction, cause this is totally a new venture for me.

Ok.

That sounds an interesting weekend project for me :)

Have you had a look at nokia chat? I think its also based on xmpp (jabber) and has location awareness. Maybe start there and maybe its open source or they use exising libraries already?

yeah is quite interesting, just not sure why our networks haven't embraced push to talk (PTT) technology yet, apparently in America there are a couple of networks that support it. But think if I get this server working at my work that the next thing I'll do is set one up at home for the family.

No I havent..will give it a try
