Push to Talk

You would be transferring a very small file, depending on quality and length it could take anything from 1sec to 5sec (assuming GPRS). It will obviouly be a lot quicker with 3G phones.

Latency is still a huge concern when it comes to PTT technology though.

this is totally unconfirmed. But I heard that the SAPS's new radio network is on some kind of GPRS PTT type scenario. Proberly still 2 years away in terms of becoming live, but will be interesting. As I said, this is rumour and very little fundamental basis for this comment.

Ptt

Im using PTT for the past week to chat to my girlfriend at tech and a friend in england. Works like a dream, altough it has a bit of a delay when using GPRS.

Bismay....what application are you using for PTT???

This is correct : SAPS have awarded the 500 million rand tender to Motorola(Alcom Systems) for the rollout of a national Tetra radio system.

I do not think that they have not looked at the finer details to the tetra standard .Although the standard is very good , it is currently VERY expensive as cost-per-erlang and area of coverage.
There are also other inherrant problems associated with this rollout.I will save the I TOLD YOU SO till later.
PTT in South Africa is going to be a very exciting time competition between the networks as the customer always benefits on the reduced cost from the competative marketing.

v3g,

Does our network currently support Push to Talk (or PoC if I recall correctly)?
This is something I am very interested in using.

Thanks

Last update from Vodacom is that they were testing PTT, have not heard anything since then. I am also very keen to use this service.

Yes the network is PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular or just PTT) ready and Vodacom is still busy testing. The biggest obstacle to going commercial is the non-compatibility between the different vendors at the moment.

Practically the vendors will have to settle the standards and produce inter-operable handsets. I suspect another 8 to 12 months, but that's just my guess.

... but overpriced...
You can say that again!! I just use AgileMessenger on my symbian phone and connect to MSN via GPRS and with it i can aslo send voice messages like PTT, and I rarely use more than 2MB of data per day, so its a WHOLE lot cheaper :D

I use a little java app on my V3 called MXit, it works really well and uses almost no bandwidth... It also enables me to connect to all my instant messanging networks at once... it supports MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and AIM.

I don't think it supports voice or anything, but it still rocks!

Agile can also connect to Yahoo, ICQ and AIM, and AFAIK there is also a Java version availible somewhere, i'll see if i can find it..
