Pushing the graphics envelope

Jon its 3k at pczone! For the XFX too!! Think im gonna buy myself one tomorrow :P

Read this short post on the 8600 from www.systemshock.co.za .Its kinda of like a quick review

Been playing around with this card now in particular the 8600GT and I must admit the performance is worse than any benchmark could ever show. It's shocking.
I'll have some shadermark results later, but I kid you not. In some tests the 8600GT is not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, heck you think it's impossible right....? Nope, it's upto 5X slower than the 8800GTS 320 and 640MB version. That means even in SLI a single 8800GTS 320MB will run circles and then some on the 8600GTS.

I will admit this is in a particular test but still, its absolutely appalling what NVIDIA has done. This only other card to be worse than this is the GeForce FX5600, now I need not remind you how tragic that experience was. It was replaced by the far superior FX5700Ultra, therefor bringing the mid-range back into gear just as with GF4 Ti4200 and before. This however is inexcusable. Sure drivers will get better, but they will not fix the 13fps difference between this and the 7600GT at 1280x1024.

AMD is going to walk all over this this round and not just a beating of 10% but almost double the frame rates. If you remember GF4 Ti4800 vs Radeon 9700 then you know.

Absolute rubbish part by NVIDIA.

pretty good reason i guess. my excuse too :P but i still would like both!

maybe MS can build us a pc that plays games with the quality of the 360, and the cost of the 360... please? pretty please? ill even buy a legal OS if you do this!

lmao youve not seen crysis then?

im pretty sure its makes an xbox look 10 years old

ps razor get yourself a 8800gts 320 meg version, its freakin amazing just make sure you have a core 2 back it up :)

I don't think the original thread had anything to do with which is better between consoles and PC's. It's been about the graphics processing prowess and for the most part the PC has always been superior, actually it has.

The problem here is that we're not talking about the same measurement yard stick.

1) Most Console games never make it to PC
2) Console games are inherently lower res than PC games

Hence an apples to apples comparison is impossible.
Most games that eventually make it to the PC either look the same as they do on the console or better. (SCDDA withstanding as that was just a crap port)

At any given time a PC game that is available on the Console has to be driven at a much higher res than on a TV and at a better frame rate with a higher refresh rate as well. That by nature places the PC at a disadvantage.

As for which platform visually is better, it's still the PC (for the same artwork)

Also let's not use Crysis as to why the PC is better, the reasons why Crysis will not see the light of day on the 360 or PS3 has to do with other resources outside of graphics power. On a 7800GT from 2005 you have 256MB of GPU RAM to load exclusively meshes, textures and code. On cosoles 512MB is shared between every and anything. At any given point to play crysis you have at least 1.25GB of space to use, on a console you have less than half that to use for everything.

8800/HD 2900 >Xbox360 Xenos > 7800GT/GTX > RSX

As for the gfx card pricing, you only find R8K pricing locally that isn't a reflection of the PC gaming everywhere. Asus EN8800GTX 768MB = R4,212 on mWave, Zipzoomfly and circuit city.

Is this still the case? When new console games are "theoretically" capable of 1920x1080? Are many PC gamers running at that resolution or higher?

Yes consoles are capable of 1920x1080 but the pc is capable of 2560 x 1600. Are many console gamers running at that resolution. Many pc gamers are at the moment moving up to th 22 inch monitor . going to 1680 x1050. Monitors ate higher resolution are still very expensive just like to enjoy the console at it's best you would an expensive hd tv.

hehehe, i have seen it yeah :D been keeping an eye on it for the last year or more. and i seriously cannot imagine it being MUCH better looking than Gears of War (running on the UT3 engine). but the pc will also soon have a few games running on this awesome engine, of which Rainbow 6 Las Vegas is a good example

Personally i think that the consoles have closed the gap between PC's for good. as long as MS and Sony keep this up, we will always have consoles that push out better graphics than the average pc. for now i am still a pc gamer with the odd adventure enjoyed on the consoles, but keep this pricing trend up and i say FSCK PC (for gaming, since my job still requires pc's :D DOH! )

Yeah, what consoles can do in theory and what they do 90% of the time is different. Most people play 720p, while many PC gamers play 1280x1024 and as stated by some above, play 1680x1050. I though still play 1600x1200... Most PC gamers fall to within this resolutions which are both higher than 720P.

As for MS and Sony closing the gap, well it's a very complex place they find themselves in. It's in both MS, NV's and ATI's best interest to keep the PC ahead at all times or at least equal at worst. They all stand to lose allot more should the PC fall behind. So in someways you could say they sabotage (wrong would I know) the console to keep the PC ahead... (they don't I know...)

There is definitely enough room for both to flourish though which is the nicew part. It doesn't have to be either or.
