Putting a Chip on your car

Chip a Normally aspirated car, about 10% at most increase and better fuel consumption ( in my experience )
Always better to remap a forced induction car, gains are better than a piggyback chip.
 
As the other posts in this thread state - do not get a chip. Rather do a remap. I remapped my Golf 5 1.9tdi with a REVO remap and its pretty good although I think there are btter remaps. When I did mine about 4 years ago I feel Revo was fairly new to remapping TDI engines and so the tune wasnt as good as i hoped. I have never dynod my car - i would say power went up marginally from 77kW to maybe 85-90kW. Biggest boost was in torque - which I really love! Makes city driving much more pleasurable.

That said, if you had any hopes of increasing power AND improving fuel economy - defiinitely thing twice. My remap killed my fuel economy by about 10%. Even if I drive like an absolute angel making sure I shift at around 2000rpm, I never really get more than 700km city driving on a tank. Before the remap I could get close to 800.

Many of the companies offer a switching option that allows u to switch from a tuned map to a stock map and vice versa.

Save yourself some money.
Buy a packet of Simba chips, you can pick your favourite flavour.
Open packet and place chip on roof.
Keep the packet in the car so that if it falls off you can easily replace it.
Done deal.

That approach adds kilojoules not kilowatts :/
 
I have heard that dropping in a better intercooler can get you a lot more power out of that motor.

Better intercooler = lower air intake temperature. This means more (denser) air coming into the combustion chamber which will increase performance but without a re-map or chip you wont get the full advantage. Also bigger\better intercoolers tend to increase torque quite a bit and if the drive train cant handle it... :erm:
 
When I did a revo remap a few years ago its set me back about R5k. For some reason they used to charge more for diesel remaps than for petrol. Maybe its changed now im not sure. Get in touch with the guys from Vag technik.
 
a guy quoted me 2950 to do the stage 1 revo software upgrade on a jetta 5 tdi. said it will boost it from 77kw to between 95-100kw. apparently there is a 20% discount on it for 3 more days then price goes up

Weren't those 96kw already at the limit?

I'm not sure I'd feel great about squeezing more power out of it

To my knowledge there is extra lag.- whether or not you can feel it depends on quit e a few factors.

I had a larger intercooler and 'mod folk' told me about extra lag, so I Googled to check if the were right - and most of Google agrees. That's the reason for an intercooler alone making a (theoretically) car slower as it needs to be installed with other mods.

Logically - air is travelling further before reaching the turbo and the intercooler now needs more time before it's 'full'? Seems like not a clear answer

It sounds like science until you do some calculations.
Have a read of post 8 on http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/996-turbo-gt2/78459-installed-blownsix-intercoolers-today.html - then consider the volume of the air intake system as a proportion of the amount of air moving through it.
It's not a balloon being blown up by an asthmatic smoker ;)

Ibiza Cupra TDi has a MUCH MUCH bigger intercooler than a polo sportline. It's a monster. And there's hardly any lag at all - definitely no more than on a sportline.

If I'm blowing air at constant rate through a 1m metal tube - it's going to x seconds to reach the end. If I double the size of the tube to 2m ... the air will take longer to reach the end?

The models you mention may have no lag - but there are others that have felt lag (the link I posted) when changing?

So what if it takes 5 MINUTES to get through the tube? The tube has air in it already - and pressure increase is propagated at the speed of sound...?
Lag is a very subjective thing. Never seen an accurate way of measuring it ;)
