Sorry, am certain this has been asked before - my friend is going through a split-up and of course the pettiness has now extended to who gets the PVR :wtf: She doesn't mind giving him the PVR, but she seems to have recorded half of DStv and doesn't want to lose that stuff if there's a way around it. My understanding is that the Smartcard and PVR are linked, in that you need that specific card in that specific PVR to access the progs that were recorded?

tell him to give her the pvr and take the dishwasher rather

Either way they both want DSTV right? so no matter who takes the decoder, one of them will need to get a new one with a new subscription and new card, so why not let her have the DSTV and make her pay for the cost of the new decoder?

To answer the OP - yes, the smartcard is linked to the PVR. It is possible to get a new card though if necessary. Also, you don't need an active subscription to view the recorded media.

I think you do.... All the functionality is dead if no subscription.

OP,

Yes it is linked.

You cannot copy over the recorded stuff. Only way I see out of this is, that one party buys a DVD/HDD recorder (something like this: http://www.sony.co.za/product/rdr-hx980 but not that exact one, any other would work.) and play the content on the HD PVR, then record on the DVD/HDD Recorder. You will not be able to record in HD but atleast you would get the content of the PVR.
Remember, use RCA's and not HDMi cables.
