Need advice. I have a standard SD single view decoder, and I want to get the kids DSTV in their room. If I buy an explora, will it work with my SD decoder for dual view purposes? Does the same apply with the HD PVR? Of course the price of Explora is ridiculous, is it really worth it instead of buying an HD PVR?

Yes it would work and if it were me, I'd buy the Explora.

Much newer tech and future proof.

Short answer yes explorer , HD PVR (and even the single view HD) is compatible with xtra view of course it depends What model number is your Single view decoder

So I bought the Explora and installed it myself. DSTV told me that my dish is too small (60cm) to use with Explora, but I proved them wrong and make it work. But I couldn't use my decoder (9900) for extraview because apparently it's too old. So now I need to get a new decoder for extraview. The installation of Explora is not complicated, and I'm shocked that I was quoted R1300 for installation.

You didn't prove them wrong. It will work with a 60 cm dish but at the first sign of any signal interference such as the weather you are going to lose your picture very quickly. that is why a minimum 80cm dish is "recommended" for The HD decoders.

You were quoted R1300 including a new dish and probably a quad lnb were you not? What did you pay for the twin lnb (at least) you had to install for the explora and what will you pay for a new dish and quad when they switch to high - band?

They are trying to prepare you and get you future proof... You did not proof them wrong.

It has rained cats and dogs in Centurion in the last two days and the signal was only lost once for 10 seconds. I rotated the dish to get the signal quality to 99% and the signal strength to above 85%, so it works wonders.

DVB-S2 is not running at full capacity, so yes, right now it will work. Good luck with your install during 2015...

I take it you going to add dstv technician to your CV, since you did such a sterling job of installing your dstv decoder over an already installed dstv system?

But, he rotated his dish to get 98% quality. That's a worthy skill or dumb luck. Or, BS.

I'm not very impressed. We moved into a new building and was told we have to make use of their DSTV technician. He came in, installed everything and charged R3000 (needed a lot of cable to come from the roof to our flat, and then to install xtra view and a new dish). A week after he left, I noticed I didn't get about half the channels. Been trying to get him out since then. They're very fast to take your money and run. I have been thinking about getting Explora, and then getting another technician to come install it. And fix his blunders. But I think it's worth it letting them do it - if you get a good guy

I bought quad lnb and cable from game for R500. When are they switching to high - band?

It's imminent.

So, an extra R800 would have got you a new dish and labor? And you would have been future proof. Yet, you want to imply that you somehow avoided being ripped off?
