Hiya all,

Seen many threads about the HD PVR, but dont wanna hijack someone elses, so started a new one instead. Got a few questions:

1. Anyone know the launch date?

2. I see the price est is about R2500. Is this confirmed by a reputable person, like someone working at DSTV?

3. If I get a HD PVR, can I still use it with my normal non LCD TV....and then upgrade my TV to LCD later, or MUST I have a HD enabled TV?

Cheers
CF ;)

1st of all, why get a HD PVR if u dont have an HD tv?

Ok, gotta explain I guess. I was looking for a PVR...but told to wait, cos HD PVR is coming. I also wann get a HD TV...but much later this year. So rather get the HD PVR when its released (soon is all I have managed to find out WRT release date), than getting a non HD PVR...then TRYING to sell it later when I upgrade to a HD TV. So ja...am thinking rather get the HD PVR...then when I upgrade to HD TV, Im sorted. So thats why I wanna know if the HD PVR will work fine with a non HD TV ;)

Media launch for HD PVR: 24 July

Likely available date: Sometime in August.

You can use it with any TV AFAIK as DSTV won't be selling 2 PVRs and most of the channels won't be HD anyway.

now if they would just let us trade in our non HD-PVR's for the HD ones... :)

You guy's know the USB port on the PVR decoder?

Is it active or does one have to phone DSTV for it to be enabled?
Whats the point of having a USB port but u can't use it.

Was supposed to be in stores from 18 July, but looks like it will be delayed to next week. M/Choice's launch event is on 24th July.

2. I see the price est is about R2500. Is this confirmed by a reputable person, like someone working at DSTV?
"Will be same price point as current PVR." So R2500 sounds right.

3. If I get a HD PVR, can I still use it with my normal non LCD TV....and then upgrade my TV to LCD later, or MUST I have a HD enabled TV?
Why would you do that? The HD PVR doesn't have dualview, so if you don't have an HD TV, a better deal is the current PVR. But it'll work....

The HD PVR will broadcast standard defintion and high defintion channels.

The only HD channel that we will get post-launch is a Olympic Games channel.

I assume by early next year we will start seeing a gradual progression in terms of HD channel contact. Much like they do now, stagger the launch of SD channels.

There's two HD TVs at my house, plus a few normal TVs.

Anyone know if normal coax cable can handle HD signals,or does that also have to be upgraded?

EDIT: Are you sure that the new HD PVR won't have dual-view arf9999? Then it defeats the point of buying it! I still have a single view 1110 decoder ...

Yea I had to upgrade to a coax digital HD cable was about 400bucs for the thing.. but that was just to connect the HD DVD player to the HD LCD Tv

it should use a standard HDMI cable, which I don't think is R400... probably depends on the length/quality/place of purchase.

someone from mutlichoice was on ZaTechShow (Episode 12) and, AFAIK, said that the HD-PVR would support recording two shows and while watching a third. you are also supposed to be able to connect the current PVR to the HD one to enable you to record another SD channel(s).

the decoder is a standard piece of hardware that multichoice buys. they then load customised software on top of OpenTV (funny name considering how closed the PVR is) and sell it. the hardware obviously supports USB, but because of licensing restrictions with content providers, they cannot enable it for the purpose of downloading shows to a PC.

PS: I see that the latest ZaTechShow podcast also mentions the Multichoice HD launch. Haven't listened to the show yet...

WTF!!?? What is the point of that? That would really tick me off if the HD PVR is launched without dual view - complete waste in that case for me. I have been looking forward to this for some time but now I am just annoyed by their incompetence if this is so.

I read on another thread though that they were going with a quad-view decoder for their PVR and it looked pretty good.

You misunderstood, the new PVR requires a quad LMB install, its not dual view because it can record two channels at the same time instead. I think for a lot of people that is a real benefit.

The new HD decoder WILL NOT have dualview as integrated in current model. It will have multiple tuners for recording, but no second TV output. Multichoice will announce a new system (called "multi-view" I think) which will allow you to use a second Decoder with the same DSTV account. Thus you'll have a separate decoder for your second TV. So if you have an existing decoder, you can use that (but you'll need to run a line to the set from your dish). I heard somewhere that it was likely that the LNB may have to be upgraded as well to a Quad LNB for this to work, but I'm not so sure on that.

AH FSCK THEM THEN!!!! That is atrocious. I shall be boycotting the HD PVR in that case...

I spent ages and a fair amount of money getting a big remote extender, bought a second LCD, dug up my garden and outside tiles and lay down the connection to my outside bar area using a bloody expensive and long HDMI cable. Cost a pretty penny. Now the fsckers eliminate the technology and expect me to support them? FSCK THAT!!!! Dual View rocks and I dont want to have to find place to mount another decoder in my bar.

FSCK that annoys me...

I thought it has dual view. Well that sucks then  Damn...gonna have to think about this, would rather have a normal PVR with dual view than a HD PVR with no dual view as I wont be upgrading to a HD TV anytime soon. Sheesh...what a stuff up
