software and firmware updates come from the dsd update over sat link
the usb 1.1 port is disabled at the moment and not really connected to any software functions

ok then?? when u buy a brandnew pvr and plug it in... it starts up , no need to download software cause its factory loaded.i cant remember if the pvr supports rs232,if not,then the usb would be the only other alternative way to flash it!?
Someone asked the same question at work today 
... from what I heard from another salesperson ... another customer needed some firmware upgrade but it didn't work over the satlink download and he had to take it in for the firmware upgrade and they used the USB port. Also, there will be add on modules coming out in future that will use this, but not sure what. This is just stuff I heard at work, so not sure if its true.

USB port will probably never be implemented on current PVR for home use - the new PVR2 will be coming out next year and afaik will have USB v2.0 ports - don't know what for though as you cannot d/load content on the PVR. Possibly for loading photos onto the HD.
Current usage: get two USB flash sticks and plug in the front and the back of the PVR and you have handles to pick it up with..

Even if you could work out what O/S is used, you wouldn't be able to see the recordings without the smartcard.

I think its a 250gb IDE maxtor of witch 160gb is for 80hrs recording and the rest for video on demand still in beta testing, some left for system software
VxWorks, OpenTV platform, and the CPU that has an encrypted IDE channel..
I think its the NEC EMMA processor - and there is a linux avaliable for it.. gives me an idea (I just need to buy one... I dont use UEC's hardware at all - rather use a REAL PVR that supports HD)
