Well, there you have it out of the horse's mouth. Well sort of. Python is the first programing language he talks about. I think that says a lot.

I like what he is saying he says he would rather do everything in one language so everyone can work on it together than something that uses a bunch of different languages.

I agree with the sentiment. Depends on the project(s) type/architecture though.

.Net 6 is the best framework for building Web API’s, therefore C# is the best.
NextJS is the best framework for building web frontend applications, therefore Typescript is the best.
:)

Best for me is all about frameworks which often build upon the “aesthetics” of the language.
I find them satisfying to work on.
I like how the code looks.
I like how you can build very powerful things with extremely simple constructs/code

He’s giving pros and cons of the languages he’s used in no particular order. He specifically says that he does not dream in Python and that C flavored C++ is his choice for serious work.

As an aside, while I have a ton of respect for Carmack, there are many, many people at his level and beyond, however, they just didn’t write a popular game.

I have a shrine to Andrei Alexandrescu, I respect him and curse him at the same time.

No particular order? Did he say so?

If someone asked you what is the best would you start mentioning programing languages you don't think is the best first?
He likely started with python because it is current for him. He started with it, not because it's the best, but the one that is most recent / current for him, so the first that comes to mind to talk about. There is no such thing as a best programming language, only the best for specific outcomes and conditions

You are reading way too much into his answer in order to fit your narrative me thinks.

lol guys I'm totally reading way too much into it. I'm capitalizing on his response.

C4Cat you're right.

As Dan Grossman pointed out on his programming language course, "the best programming language" is like asking for "the best car". What will you use it for: Going to work, taking kids to school, moving furniture, racing on a track, going off road, etc.

BMW X5.

Love how OP quotes Python as best language and as the interview progresses John Carmack is pretty much like: "When I want to do serious programming.."
Aka Python is for hacking around as far as he is concerned.

Creating a huge application in a dynamically typed language is asking for trouble.

COBOL/JCL
The last time I had to create JCLs I templated it, and generated them using Python. Uploaded the results to the mainframe, and everybody happy!

Luckily it was cookie-cutter stuff, otherwise.... I guess I would have been in a world of pain as it was close to 500 different JCLs
