(CNN) -- Police in Canada are looking into the deaths of two young boys who appear to have been strangled by a python.

The boys, ages 5 and 7, were found dead Monday morning at an apartment in Campbellton, New Brunswick. They had been sleeping over at a friend's apartment above a reptile store, according to a statement from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Early indications suggest that a snake from the store escaped its enclosure, got into the ventilation system, then the apartment, and strangled the two boys, the statement said.

RCMP Sgt. Alain Tremblay described the snake as a python.

It was captured, and police have the snake in their possession.

Canadian broadcaster CBC reported the python is between 11 and nearly 15 feet long and weighs more than 99 pounds.

Autopsies on the boys' bodies will be performed Tuesday.

A neighbor, Diane Fournier, has lived on the same street as the pet store for 12 years. She described the deaths as "shocking."

"I knew the kids. They were brothers. They played in my yard with my dogs all of the time," she said.

Fournier sent CNN a photograph her husband took of the store. It showed police cars, cones and yellow tape blocking off the area.

The store, Reptile Ocean Inc., offered condolences on its Facebook page before the page shut down.

"deepest symphathies goes out to the family of the children. a terrible accident without a meaning. this page will be shut down temporarily to avoid any further demeaning comments. you should be ashamed of yourselves," the post read.

"we all have a heavy heart today. as anyone would. and attacks on the animals owner are unneccesary."

Kaa got the wrong mancubs. :(

not buying this story. why would the snake not have eaten the one child. the snake would only have squeezed it's victim if they were threatened or hungry? this does not add up in my honest opinion.

It was probably just sad and wanted some hugs.

2 boys killed after Python escapes store in Canada

A python escaped from its enclosure at a pet store in Canada, slithered through a ventilation system into an upstairs apartment and killed two young boys as they slept, police said Monday.

The boys, ages five and seven, were visiting the apartment of a friend above Reptile Ocean Inc., an exotic pet store in Campbellton, New Brunswick, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Const. Julie Rogers-Marsh.

Police arrived at the apartment around 6:30 a.m. and found the two boys dead. A friend of the boys was sleeping in another room and was unharmed, Rogers-Marsh said. She said the owner of the pet store lived in the apartment.

Rogers-Marsh said the snake escaped from its enclosure sometime during the night and was believed to have made its way into the apartment through the ventilation system.

"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said.

The snake was captured and is in the possession of police, Rogers-Marsh said. Calls to the pet store were not returned Monday.

Rogers-Marsh said autopsies were to be performed on the two victims on Tuesday. She couldn't confirm whether the two boys were related.

"It's very, very unusual and very tragic and difficult for everyone involved," Rogers-Marsh said.

The town's deputy mayor, Ian Comeau, said Reptile Ocean was licensed to operate and "everything was according to our bylaws, to the provincial guidelines."

The deaths of the boys have been "a shock ... it is unbelievable," Comeau said Monday evening. Comeau said he saw alligators, crocodiles and snakes when he toured the shop with the fire department about two years ago.

Methinks there is more to the story than a snake "strangling" 2 boys.
Pure sensationalism on the part of the journalists.

I suspect foul play. One snake killing two boys and then slithering away. Doesn't sound right.

False Stories about Snakes.

Snakes are aggressive.
Snakes like any animal can become defensive when provoked, injured or attacked whether incidental or not. To suggest a snake will deliberately get excited and attack an animal tenfold its size is ridiculous. Only the Eastern Brown Snake is easily excited and readily charges humans. Most stories about aggression comes from rural areas where the image of an animal being clobbered to death are justified by its supposedly terrible nature.

I am not knowledgeable about the habits/behaviour of snakes, but it sounds odd to me too.

If the snake was not threatened, why would it strangle two people? I can maybe understand that it strangled and then eaten one, but why strangle one and then move on to the next child and do the same without eating its prey?

my thoughts exactly blu. this story is so far fetched. i'm sure the police etc will get to the bottom of it all, especially when they start questioning experts in snakes.

Could have got both kids art the same time, and it would have been aggressive in a new environment, especially if the kids reacted to it. I don't see this as far fetched for the time being...

This story doesn't seem right - The snake could not kill 2 kids simultaneously. Surely the other child would have been screaming when the first one was attacked?

Why can the snake not kill both at the same time? Together they'd be the size of an adult. They were 5 and 7 years old...
