Hi,

I am going to be doing a much needed PC upgrade next month. Gosh, come to think of it, it has been 5 years since I've upgraded.

I'm looking at getting either the Q6600 or Q9300 core2 quad CPU. By the time I make the purchase, the Q9300 should be out ... well, I hope.

Now the question...which one should I go for? They are basically the same price, but I think the Q6600 is going to come down once the Q9300 is released. I see the Q9300 has 6MB L2 cache, while the other one has 8MB L2 cache.

I'm not a gamer, this machine is going to be used for video / audio editing and the quad core is going to kick ass when it comes to rendering video and applying VST plugins to audio.

I'm going to get an Intel DG33BU motherboard as well as 2GB DDR2-800 RAM.

Opinions please on the above question and setup?

I've never heard of the Q9300, what's are its specs?

Edit: Never mind. I've looked it up on the Intel site. It seems to be one of the new 45nm processors. I SERIOUSLY doubt you'd be able to pick one of them up for R2500 (that's roughly the price of a Q6600), but I could be wrong.

If you doing video editing, you may want to go 64bit and get more RAM.

Expect to pay about R2400 incl. VAT cost for the Q9300. That's the price I have for now.

The video editing side is purely for home use .. not pro at all. Yep, more RAM will get thrown in at a later stage, but 64 bit - I think that is going to cost me quite a bit more moula. :)

Rather go for the Q9450 ...

Intel® Core 2 Quad™ Q9300 - 2.50GHz, FSB 1333MHz, 6MB CACHE - R 2450 Incl.
Intel® Core 2 Quad™ Q9450 - 3.00GHz, FSB 1333MHz, 12MB CACHE - R 2950 Incl.

These are the specs and pricing I have, so thats the pricing you should shop for.

The Q9450 for R2950? Not sure where you're getting that price from, but the price I've seen is about R4,500 incl.

Just another thing, the R/$ exchange rate has gone for a ball of chalk. Looks like I'll have to make a purchase sooner before the prices go up.
