Q9650 price vs performance

I could OC my QX9650 to 4Ghz and I think that that will still be fine for a while to come.

If you sell your E8400 @ R500, I want first dibz. ;)

It doesn't say anything about LGA 1155 being discontinued. As I said: Intel publicly stated that LGA 1155 is mainstream, LGA 1366 is enthusiast. They also publicly stated that no LGA 1155 processor will ever feature more than 4 cores. Hyper threading will probably be disabled to make i7 more attractive. Currently the Core i5 750 is essentially a Core i7 without hyper threading, add in hyper threading and the i7 line-up doesn't have much to offer other than over-priced 4 core processors and 6 core processors.

With the Amd Bulldozer coming in however it remains to be seen if Intel will keep that strategy. Bulldozer will support a feature similar to Hyper-threading but far more advanced.

i7 based LGA1155 CPU

There you go, makes it seem like LGA1156 is going to end up in no mans land. That CPU has hyper threading, 4 real cores so 8 total, and is LGA1155 based. LGA1366 will still offer 2 full PCIe x16 slots over only one full PCIe x16 slot on LGA1155/6.

What? There are plently of 32nm chips for LGA1156 (ten that I know of), there are even two 32nm LGA1366 chips. Moving along, choosing between a quad 775 chip, or upgrading completely the best value will be gained from only upgrading your CPU. You will have to OC your chip, but making it another two years should be doable.

I said 32nm i7s, not 32nm i5s and i3s. Why would the OP want to get tied into LGA1156 (if you upgrade your PCs - personally, I haven't upgraded a CPU for at least 15 years), when he won't be able to upgrade next year because all the new chips worth getting are going to be LGA1155.
