Hi guys,

I want to upgrade sometime soon, looking at getting something to last a few years. Im not into gaming, but work a lot on Photoshop and lightroom working with large images.

I would like to get a quadcore, Q6600, good price and good speed. Will i have to run vista or will sp3 for xp support quadcore?

Also will i benifit from water cooling? i want a quite pc, not an overclocked one.

Apparently Windows Vista has better support for multiple cores. Wouldn't know about the watercooling, though... :)

What does OS have to do with your cpu ??

But to answer your question XP even with sp 1 will handle quads fine

no point in watercooling if not overclocking, there are plenty of quiet air solutions around
 
qx6700rulz - if the OS is not optimised to use more than one core it effects how efficiently your cpu is used. for instance it would be useless to expect to see benefits of multi core on Windows 95.
 
Sorry for all the smilies, damm forum seems to be up to crap

milo i think it more depends on the software you run, the OS merely provides a platform to run software which will have to be multi core optimised for it to be of any use. Eg 3ds Max would run on 95 and will use multiple cores

Well seeing as your getting a quad core, you'll probably be getting lots or RAM as well? Vista will run fine. I'm assuming that you wont be playing (old) games you'll have no issues with Vista. Try it out. Contrary to what the XP dinosaurs will tell you, its actually worth the upgrade.

I haven't used Photoshop with large files yet on my Vista machine but I doubt you'll have issues. Vista also likes downloading data..lots of it, so you'll have to spare some every month for its updates.

Just know that Vista might make your silent cooling redundant: it tends to do some defragging and indexing while its in "sleep mode". But you can switch it off or schedule it for times when you're not around to hear it make that krrr sound :rolleyes:

i have used photoshop with large files and it handles fine under vista. i am using photoshop cs3 and am only running a dual core machine with 4Gb ram.
 
Nice, thanks guys. 4 gig of ram is on the cards. I will most likely try vista, also take advantage of directx 10...

Yeah Apart from overclocking ... Noise should be the defacto main reason for going watercooling. With the right quiet series fans it must be a dream to have. If you buy one of the new more expensive motherboards from ASUS (and maybe a few others) overclocking comes as simple as a build in automatic function. By MotherBoard is running at mild overclock speeds due to a simple "CPU level up" selected function in Bios.
 
Im a all giga-byte man, so overclocking there is aslo easy, i think i will start off by changing all the non quite fans to quite ones, then upgrade to water cooling if required. PC's were not deisgned to work in african conditions, and that constant zweeeeee detracts somewhat...
