Does anybody have a link to a easy to use, preferrably affordable quantity surveying software product? I got a pricelist from a place today, but it's absolutely disgusting how much the cost it. One module alone is close to R2500 and you need about 3.

I need it for one of my friends dad, he's into construction and needs to work out cost estimates and just all round surveying stuff.

He told me that there was a software package like this advertised on the tv program "Die nutsman", but I get nada on that site.

Do any of you guys know of something like this? It has to be easy to use and configure though, and not the price of a cow ;)

Edit: and the products that cost cows are on the South African quantity surveying site, so don't recommend those please.

Thanks peoples:p

Well if he wants to make an omelet he needs to break some eggs. I have Engineering Survey apps(Model Maker), Autocad, Caddie and they cost a fortune. Want to see some expensive apps try www.knowbase.co.za

If its for work then he needs to spend the dosh. After all the developers of the software dont work for free.

I have to agree with your sentiments Freshy, but I don't think the cost justifies the use, I agree that you need to fork out some cash for a decent software package, and I'm not saying these people are wrong in their asking price, that's why I didn't mention the software package name I got the pricelist for, the developers indeed work hard and the cost is justified, but just not for this persons needs. Take this scenario, it's a small scale contractor that needs a professional solution, he won't be able to carry the cost of R10000 for the full software package, that excludes a new laptop to run the thing on, I may be shooting hoops here, but there has to be a laymans solution, a solution for the common folk, if I may say that ;)

Fair enough, but surely he can do it the old fashioned way if its only on a small scale? Im afraid he hasnt got a lot of choice here unless the software has a budget version? For example Model Maker has 9000, 32000 and unlimited survey point versions. PM me a link to the software if you dont mind?

The problem with QS software is that it has to meet heaps and heaps of SA-specific requirements. The market for such software is relatively small, so the developers need price it quite high to meet their development costs.

I used to work a lot with MicroQS, and that had most of the market at the time; dunno what's mainly in use now.

Thing is, if using such software saves you money, there should be no issue justifying the cost. If not, carry on using Excel or paper or whatever.

I assume you're referring to WinQS?

My father is in Dubai atm but coming back on Saturday, his office works with WinQS IIRC so let me find out from him what can be done. I'm pretty sure if there is something he will know about it.

I'm referring to any QS software that's priced that high, I'm not talking about one software package alone, I would've loved to hear what the software on "Die Nutsman" was about, anyone got info on that?

Being in the QS business: Paper, pen and calculator quite often beats anything on a PC :-)

I have to agree :p Luckily it's not me that need the software, I don't even think I really know what QS is, lol!
