Hey guys so I have the Sony A700 and find that noise on ISO 800 and above is absolutely shocking.
All other settings are on auto.

Would the Nikon D700 be much better in terms of upgrading?

Thanks

But hang tight, Nikon is widely rumoured to be releasing the update to it soon. If that's true (and it's about time), it might very well have the same sensor as the D3S, which is better.

That rumour has been going for months. Do you think it is imminent?

I'm not sure what their strategy is. If you look purely at release dates, then no. The D700 was launched almost a year after the D3. But the D3X has been out for a year and the D3S for six months, and they're going to have to respond to the 5DmkII sooner or later. So I'd be surprised if we don't see an update this year.

I'm also looking at changing kit sometime soon..

Whilst I love my Sony, it does lose out in some of the performance to other brands..... and the ISO perf is not great at all.

100% crop at ISO100 on my A-100, with no noise reduction... Dodgy!

Even with a D40 Nikon, it will never look like that. Don't trust those guys on ODP. All Sony's have noise issues...

EDIT: A-900 looks acceptable from what I've seen, but at a price.

Yeah now to sell my kit and get the D700 :(:(
The noise issue on Sony Alpha cameras is shocking.
I used a flash and had noise at 800, a woman next to me didnt even use a flash and had no noise on her Nikon

How fast was the glass you were using?

18-200 Sigma
Do you really think the lens would make such a difference?
Your use of a flash complicates things but all thing being equal if you were zoomed at 200mm you'd have a maximum aperture of f/6.3. If she was shooting at f/2.8 she'd need 2-3 times less light for the same shot.

Can you make the raw file available somewhere?

I don't have anything set up...

I've tried everything though. I thought, really, it can't be this bad. Took it in for a proper cleaning. Changed from using photoshop to convert RAW to the Sony software, after being advised by someone on here (this actually helped a little). I now use noise ninja on all my photographs and I get acceptable results like that, but I need an upgrade.

You might be able to squeeze one in here http://www.quickshare.co.za/ as long as it is under 10MB.
