so ah me and my girlfriend used a condom everytime without fail for the passed year or so. weve gotten quite serious so we considering changing our form of birth control.

So my basic questions are. how much are birth control pills(roughly)? can i get them over the counter?

also how much does 1 morning after pill cost(roughly)? and can i get them over the counter too?

I know the dangers and side effects of both already just too scared to go ask my pharmacist these questions so i hope my forumites can :P

i'ts not healthy to take plan b (morning after) at all. afaik you get the standard "the pill" which you buy and take, but you need a prescription for that and then the other (can't remember name now for it) where she goes for blood tests first. seriously if you can't ask the pharmacist because you are to scared or shy then you shouldn't be considering it ;)

BCP are very cheap.
Take her to see a nurse. There are Clicks pharmacies with nurses.
She will ask some questions and do some tests(weight, blood pressure) and then advise to which pills she should use. They usually supply you with your first 3 packets there and then.

After that you can buy them at any clinic, medical centre, hospital. We currently pay R10 a packet. Do not buy them from pharmacies. Very expensive then.

The most important thing is to do it together, don't let her go off to see the nurse alone. Takes two to tango.

She can also get "The Pill" for free at any state clinic.

Morning after pill is a big no no. Very bad for your girlfriend.

It works but the risk of lasting effects are too big.

Remember the pill is only effective if used properly. Depending on the type it needs to be taken when required, will not work if she is on antibiotics, if she has diarrhoea or vomiting etc etc.

Also remember the pill can result in side effects like weight gain, mood changes etc. She may need to shop around until she finds one that suits her.

Rather speak to a professional.

The thing with antibiotics have never been proven conclusively. Lots of mixed opinions.
But I won't take a chance while she is on antibiotics. Go back to the condoms while and for at least 14 days after she last took antibiotics.

But yes, she needs to take it every day and try to take it at the same time every day.

So then pretty pointless to even raise that point surely?!?!

I refer to your post.

will not work if she is on antibiotics

You can't say that when it can not be proven.

And I did add.

not at all. many things haven't been conclusively proven, does that mean we shouldn't speculate?

I refer to your post.

So here we are providing advice to someone who is considering the use of the pill with his girlfriend, we are not debating on a medical forum as to whether antibiotics affect the effectiveness of the pill, and we feel the need to nitpick the choice of words in expressing the concerns about these two medications together.

So I hope you also argue with the doctor when he says use other contraception while on antibiotics!

I personally prefer, in a case like this, to interpret "may not be effective while using antibiotics" to mean it will not work!!! And this is the advice I'll pass on to the OP!! Which strangely enough is exactly what you said you do yet still felt the need to argue the way I expressed it.

And perhaps I should also nit pick and point out that I did say "depending on the type of pill you take". Now I'm sure there might be one pill in the entire world which has conclusively been proven to not work with a certain type of antibiotic!

Because I would not want the OP to stress his ass off when his GF is on antibiotics and a condom breaks. /experience talking

When told: "It does not work when using antibiotics", some people immediately think PREGNANCY. That is not the case.
But then I will also need to tell him that woman are only able to conceive a few days out of the month.

/back to topic.

If you guys do decide on going the pill route.
My fiancee used to take it in the mornings but the food cravings and mood swings really bothered her. We went back to the nurse to see if she could recommend a different type. She advised her to rather take the pill at night and see if that helps.
It worked perfect and she has been on the same pill for 4 years now.

If your girlfriend has a gynecologist, you guys can speak to him/her as well. They can provide some solid advice, discuss the pitfalls and strengths of each method, and even provide some good alternatives. It's better to discuss it with a health professional as there are also some really nasty stuff out there, that work well but can cause serious problems later on. When we finally decided to have a baby, we battled for years because some of the stuff my wife used earlier made a mess of things. "The pill" is not the only solution anymore. There are a couple of different types now.

yeah i know plan b isnt good for the womans body at all, were getting over using condoms now so were looking for a better alternative catch my drift :o

we probably will end up going to a clinic of sorts later on

IUD - (Inter Uterine Device) like the Mereina. One 15 minute visit to a gynae, (Couple of grand) and 5 years baby free happiness. No pills, Condoms, Schedules.... Just pomp when u want:D

Maybe someone can advise him/me on using the "Injection".

I have no experience and would actually like to find out more about it too. I know it lasts up to 3 months per injection and might be safer than the pill.

yah lots of my friends in germany, Netherlands and belgium do get these injections. much safer than anything else :) she must just go to her gynecologist

Gynaecologist visit would be best or at the very absolute least her hopefully experienced GP. Basically the pill pending brand will have a lot of other effects that she may/not be prone to.. can vary from weight gain, acne, moods etc There are many methods but all with some form of latency(fertility impeded for x months or yrs during or after) & risks of infertility hence its not a simple thing of here are some pills and off you go.

btw some use pills for regulation of hormones(in particular acne) too(with the contraceptive part being a btw factor) so it can be a good thing or bad. Lastly.. don't forget two things.. 1. offers not protection from sti, 2. Visits to gynae need to be done.(to pick up complications, unlike guys who don't make annual visits to get checked out)
