I now live on a plot in Randfontein and I noticed something rather interesting yesterday.

In the computer room, the best we can get is 80% signal on GPRS... but if I take a walk to the middle of the field +-75m away, I get full 3G signal...

Would an external antenna be able to use that to get me 3G speeds indoors?

Wow, that antenna looks rather potent... probably comes with a "potent" price tag too...

Does anyone know if vodacom still offers that 3G router with a data package?

It's (only) R750 ex VAT, but you would probably also need a connector, which is about R250 ex VAT. Go to www.poyntingdirect.co.za. Phone them before you order, unless you know exactly what you want.

For sure. Even better than what you're getting out in the field. The external antenna will be higher up and will have a substantial gain. All thing RF signals love.

And as already posted, not expensive. Get one. You won't be sorry.

What data card do you use?

I'll definitely look into that...

It's a data card that my friend gave me, uhm, not sure of the exact model but it's the standard red one that supports everything from GPRS to HSDPA.

If I can get a decent data connection, preferrably 3G, I'll take out a data contract.

I am missing my internet connection and unfortunately my existing provider, iBust, cannot tell me when there will be a tower nearby nor can NeoTel.

There should be a model no. on the underside.

Cool, it will have a pig-tail available. (The bit that connects the card to the antenna). Get the exact make and model of the card before you phone Poynting. It'll be on the back of the red card.

Can't you convert you iBurst account to one of their 3G ones?
