It's been a long wait, but soon our household will have DSL. JOY!

Currently there are 3 PCs in our household, 2 of which are networked via an 8-port switch, and the 3rd which soon will be. However, I'm not sure how this will work re the ADSL connection, since we want the single connection to support multiple users simultaneously.

My question is thus: will it suffice to buy an ADSL modem, which will plug into a single PC, and all Internet requests will go through the switch and then the modem (via internet connection sharing)? Or is it a better idea to dump the switch and buy an ADSL router+modem instead?

Also, if I do decide to by a router/modem combo, is it worthwhile going wireless, or is cable still the way to go?

No no no... get an ethernet ADSL modem plug him in the switch and ur done... as easy as that... U can also get a ADSL router with built in ports (like a switch).

Like Scooby_Doo said: simply get a cheap ethernet ADSL modem (not the USB version), configure the modem with your account settings and DHCP etc. and then connect the LAN port of the modem to your existing ethernet hub/switch.

Thanks for the replies, and for the welcome ;). So then, which ADSL modem do you suggest? I'm currently looking at the D-Link DSL-300T, but I've heard good things about the NetGear and Billion products as well.

I personally like the Billion, Very easy to set up and very user friendly.. :)

:) i dont find linksys to be very user friendly for support..

Which modem

We use the D-Link DSL300T without any problems. Nice thing about them is they have a 24 hr support line in SA, and their equipment is cheap (approx R350 ex VAT)
