Is grief - the stages, the intensity, the duration, etc - different if someone close to you dies, but you did not necessarily have a good/happy/positive relationship with that person ?

Define 'close'?

Close as in a family member you rarely communicate with or see?
Close as in a good friend or family member you got on well with and then had a fallout with or something similar?

Family member with whom you have had a troubled relationship for years.

All I can say is don't over analyse it. The way you feel is the way you feel.

I don't know that there's appropriate time for grief in any scenario. The important thing is to let yourself feel whatever you feel.

In my experience, the answer is yes.

Same as fonoi....yes is my answer. When my father dies I imagine I wont feel much besides anger that I didnt get the chance to punch him in the face...but a close relative I have a good relationship with like my mother...dont even wanna think about that

There's a brilliant movie with Tom Cruise called Magnolia where he deals with this type of grief.
Like the the previous poster said, feel what you need to feel and don't hold it in just because the relationship went sour.

Yes it comes in stages of sadness, anger etc. I never had a close relationship with my dad and I was angry when he died then I felt sad but you can work through it all. It's hard work but you do get through it....

You'll be fine.
